Also, since I plan on using an Android phone in combination with the Joy-Cons, does it matter what kind of pants I'm wearing (tight vs loose)? (I thought shorts like these [www.amazon.com] might be good for keeping the phone in place.)
I plan on playing Skyrim and Fallout 4 VR, so since I'll be running a ton, figured I might as well get the setup as accurate (in terms of real life movement corresponding to in-game movement), consistent and comfortable as possible. Unfortunately most bands seem oriented towards arms or thighs (as opposed to ankles), so didn't know if they'd be too tight or loose (same with gym short pockets being too loose for the phone, but at least there are tighter pants.) But maybe I'm just overthinking it.
What headset and controllers do you have? Oculus Quest 1/Rift S/CV1 controllers have a magnet in the batteries cover, so I would recommend to put the smartphone in the back pocket of the pants to avoid magnetic anomalies. Remember that we detect the orientation using the magnetometer (compas) sensor.
Oculus Quest 2 removed the magnet from the battery cover, so in this case (and in the case of the rest of VR controllers) you could put the smartphone in the side pockets.
