Does this game have a clear plot?
I'm interested in purchasing Othercide, but I have one question regarding the game that might make or break my decision to buy it. Does the game have a clear plot, or clear lore?

I'll try to explain what I mean. I watched a dude on YouTube play through the first half hour or so, which is basically the tutorial and intro. There was a lot of speech, characters going on about veils and suffering, and I didn't understand what anyone was on about. It made me suspect that Othercide is the sort of game where the plot is obtuse, hidden from the player, or not explained. The sort of game that asks you to be invested even though you only have a vague hint of what's going on.

One of the reasons that I don't like Dark Souls, or most Soulslike games, is that the plot is never made clear. Fighting and slaying a giant monster can be fun, but it's much more engaging if I understand who I'm playing as, what I'm doing here, why I am fighting this giant monster, and what's at stake if I lose. If I even understand who I'm playing or what I'm doing, then my investment in the game disappears. I'm not saying that I need everything explained to me at the beginning. It's fine and normal for a story to reveal the plot piecemeal overtime. I just what to know if it's all made clear eventually. As in, when you finish the game, you basically understand what happened. In the case of Dark Souls, fans are still arguing over what any of it means nine years later.

I would say the game does have clear plot and lore - but it is not shoved in your face, you have to read the "memories" section as you unlock them. The writing is actually good and there's a lot of details there about the long history of the Mother growing up and the characters that are important to her. Again you can miss all this if you just plow through the missions but if you take time to read the lore you pick up, it IS there and satisfying.

Honestly, I don't know what to answer. On one hand - Othercide does have a story. In fact, two stories - one is about the Mother and where she came from. Another - about the Child and events that lead to "The Age of Shattering".

On the other hand, Dark Souls too has a story about Everlasting Dragons, New Gods and two "serpents" who manipulated all of them. But you say that Dark Souls don't have story or lore?

I'm not sure how to respond to this except by iterating that I literally did not say this. I said that in Dark Souls, the lore is obscure and hidden. The writers probably have a few ideas as to what's happening, but they don't let the player in on it. I get that story details can be found in NPC dialogues and item descriptions, but even once you have it all, the game is still mostly a mystery. Some players find the mystery intriguing, but to me it feels like the writers just skipped out on their jobs.

Ah, I see. Well, I can say that in Othercide you'll sure get all the Mother's story and Veil's lore that is written in 'memory' entries towards the game's end.
