The Perfect Fishing Game - The Fighting Fish
Continuing this series from The Perfect Fishing Game (Search "The Perfect Fishing Game" on this forum) lets look at how the fish fight and how a good reeling mechanic is instrumental in building the perfect fishing game.

Different fish fight differently. This is why you don't have sports fisherman going after Carp and Catfish. Their fight is just not as exciting and flashy as some other species. Where a Carp or Catfish may stay deep and strip lots of line or lay on the bottom like a boat anchor, the Basses and Trouts offer a different fight. Vigorous head shaking, short powerful runs, and spectacular jumps are what to expect from these “sporting” species.

The length of their fights differ as well. A sporting fish will be more likely to break the line or shake the hook in short order. If it fails to do so the fish is all but done, beside maybe a last burst of energy when it nears the boat or shore. On the other hand, Carp will initially just run like the wind stripping off yard upon yard of line until it is tired. Then it's just a dead weight to reel in with a little tugging near the end. Catfish, and this can vary slightly between species, will initially make a blistering run, if they even notice they're hooked at all with the bigger fish. After that they are a long fighting slow steady pull till the end. In all cases the reeling mechanic should properly reflect these different fighting styles.

Recommended simplification of fighting styles for the game...
1) The Runner: This fish strips line in a glorious long fast runs coupled with tremendous horizontal leaps into the air. Afterwards they pull and tug a little here and there as they are reeled in. With the bigger fish they may offer a second or third burst of running. The goal here is to manage drag right from the start in order to not be broken off. Afterwards small adjustments to drag may be necessary as the fight tugs between runs. The angler must be prepared for another line breaking run. Barracuda, Bone-fish, Pike, Musky, Tarpon, Alligator Gar.

2) The Grappler: This fish runs in very short bursts mixed with vigorous tugging and head shaking. This is repeated until caught, with one or two extra strong bursts mixed in. The goal with this class of fish is to have a medium to heavy drag initially set and to adjust quickly as needed. This fish will repeatedly make very strong pulls with the shaking of its head, enough to often break off an unprepared angler. Short strong runs, where the drag must be loosened, are intermixed between tugging and shaking. This fish often exhibits glorious horizontal head shaking leaps. Most Bass, Walleye, Salmon, Mahi-Mahi, Crappie, Red-fish, Jacks.

3) The Anchor: This fish may initially make a medium length run, but results to sitting on the bottom and being lifeless and heavy as it can be. It may make another strong medium run or two during the fight. The goal here is to hold on for deal life and hope you have the tackle to handle the load. With bigger fish it may seem the fish doesn't even know its hooked and moves very little. But when it does move, when it realizes it is hooked, be prepared to hang on with everything you have. This fish will just go at a medium pace, and it's hard to stop. At times you may even think you've been tangled up on some underwater debris and have lost the fish. Don't be fooled. This freight train will surely start moving again. You have to vary your drag in order to not break off the fish until it gets tired enough to allow you to begin to drag it in. With bigger fish it may take off on one or two more unstoppable, loathful runs. But by then the fight is all but over, and only the task of reeling in a larger dead weight is left. Catfish, Carp, Goliath Grouper, Rays.

NOTE: Some of the fish categorized above can exhibit more than one of the styles listed above. The categorization here is a simplification.

Yeah this is a wall of text that doesn't tell much about this game either. So I am wondering what the OP take is on the current available fishing simulators. I recently returned back with fishing planet, and then tried out RF4 (which a bit more then FP because of the porgression mechanics and crafting).

So I was wondering where this game falls in comparison and if it is worth downloading this to try, I already gathered that this game is a huge grindfeast, which to be honest RF4 is as well the further I advance. And in that aspect I think FP has the better economy, even with how expensive their unlimited licenses are.

Honestly, i've never played RF4 or FP. I've only played Ultimate Fishing Simulator and this game.

My intent here is not to say one game is better than another, but only to give my opinion on what I think would make the perfect realistic focused fishing game.

In this entry I focused on the fight of the fish. Naturally the fight would be reflected in the line to rod to reel. If you've ever fished in a situation where it is possible to catch more than one species, a good fisherman can predict what fish is on his line just by how it fights.

I hope to later discuss other things.

As was covered in my first installment, the problemn with any game, not just fishing games, is making it last for a long time. This is, after all, a single player game with some minor multiplare aspects. Therefore it will ultimately have an end-game barring expanding towards the absurd.

It's a fun game. It has the potential to be a great game. It may hvae been a bit over anxious in its release. If the developer wishes to make this game last, some serious changes must be made or people will just become boared and move on. It's in their hands. I'm just offering my opinion on how they can survive because I know fishing very well.

You're right about all of it IMO.
But honestly after about 300hrs total on Fishing Planet ( not so much at all but .. well it makes some hours )
I can say that a fishing game is made for people who like fishing.
If you discover fishing. Please go outside and fish IRL first.

I dont say that the game is bad. Not at all i love it but if you think you can be a pro with a simulation game ( fishing/mecanic/driving or whatever ) you are wrong !
But i think all fishing games are different and offer different feelings : UFS feels to me much "sport fishing" and i love it. PF is more about chilling and fishing here and there with some music..
And FishingPlanet is more a mmo farming fishing game, when i want to make some money :)
I never touched RussianFishing.
I hope everybody have fun with every fishing games ;)
Have a nice day
hello, yes all fishing games have positive and negative point.

I think the player has to know what he likes or not in this kind of game. Here is a game list that I have 40 minutes test at + 3800 hrs and from my experience I see so

fishing club 3D (+ 400h)
multiplayer it is undoubtedly above all games, but pay to win and very expensive! the graphs and the realism let's say

Trophy fishing 2 (+ 800h)
More than 800 fish to catch, the individual and multiplayer competitions are nice, the graphics and decor are limit as the reality of a fight

Atom fishing 2 (320h)
the landscapes and cycle day night are of an exceptional beauty, the game is very craft and the fishing is intensive, too intensive to gain little, the realism of the fights is realistic, but it takes a life for this game.

pro fishing simulator (6h)
should not have the name of pro or simulator, have detected a huge potential in this game, which is very bad to exploit, more communication between devs and community is equal to zero, for few have it would say that have is on phishing planet

fishing sim world (42 min!)
the deluxe dlc of euro fishing with still months of sensation and it is a pity because the devs are nice

euro fishing (8h)
This game I wanted to believe, I play to be with my rare friends who play, but I have never managed to find fun or pleasure, plastic fish already gives me hives, cot grafique c is limit and gameplay is not great either, understand why few people play it

phishing planet heu fishing planet (3800h)
the game is probably one of the most beautiful, the fight can be not bad, but it stops the dream, the game is run by the worst despot and autocrat of the video game, it does not interfere with the name of its competitor, crushes and oppresses all those who dare to say a negative thing about the game, soon I will publish my own story with this despot with proof of the messages exchanged and received, it is edifying, short beyond this, the game is a real money pump for novices or beginners, most of the time you will look at the water without taking anything ...

RF4 (100h)
if you are looking for the realistic game it is this one, no doubt, but be careful the extreme realism has a destructive effect on the fun you will find on a less realistic and more arcade game.
grafically the game is beautiful too, the gameplay and the successful fight, but can be laborious, the big black point of this game is to pay to progress or spend a life on the game

I have kept my two heartbroken for the end

ultimate fishing (+ 600h with beta test)
fun, more arcade than realistic, have fun between friends, the game has a modest but nice fighting system, the grafiques are average,

professional fishing (+700 h with beta test)
the score panfish and competition is excellent, I only play the competitions, because the rest of the game suffers from a lack of realism, have too much arcade for me, but competitions between friends or rival team ... is hell, have a laugh, have fun, have this beats, have lost :( have won :)
Another big thing with ultimate fishing communication community and devs is great, (on other forum I would be ban for this post)
Here have this respect, have little discuss everything, without being threatening or insulting.

to celebrate good day to all :)
and whatever your opinion or your game, have fun

Thats a great sum up, i agree. Your view on other games is really spot on.
I have many hours invested in all these games and as you sum it up each one has something specific. There's no perfect one. Nothing will beat the exp of actual sitting at the water.

Ive been fishing for 25 years, cause im from Belgium it is mainly Carp , welsh and pike. And i look for a mixture of all those games when i play. I dont wanna grind myself to death on roach because i would not do that irl either. And also just catching a 60 kg welsh like it is a panfish does not attract me.
What i like in this game is the way it evolves. You can not compare the dev of this game with any other one, fishing sim or other.

Here i have the feeling that the dev's are fellow gamers, in the same boat trying to make this a unique game. With ups and downs offcourse but whats more important it happens 'without any ego's' When they make a mistake they will admit it and try to fix it together with their community. There's people streaming here and at the same time making stuff for other gamers to make it easyer for starting players. That is fantastic (Angel)

Just look at this forum, and than go to rf4 or FP. It takes you just a sec to see the difference.
If you wanna be involved in the creation of a game hell this is the place to be.

Just my five cents, the last ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ from me( this year) ;)

Have a great new year everyone !!
