Create private lobby

Am trying to create a private lobby for me and my friends, is there no way to do this other than paying a minimum of 100 gems to do this?

No, unfortunately. Devs could just rake chips at such tables, like it is on Pokerstars for example, but they want us to buy from them something at any cost. It is difficult to blame them for that, the game is massively free-to-play, but some of their marketing decisions are really perplexing me. This one is one of those. My advice is to try Pokerstars or any other poker client with play money for playing with your friends, or just sit on regular tables with some randoms. And you can only create a SNG table for gems, afaik.
