So now that I'm typing ...
I don't really have a problem with single players doing whatever they with a game, if Cheat Engine makes someone feel good, well, it's probably not as bad as heroine. The OP does make the case clear it isn't about "beating" the game with a cheat, but exploring/testing the game. I actually like the idea of someone using an exploit to figure out how to "break" a game, but then they need to see if the thing they found can be done without the hack to get something really satisfying to my way of thinking. "System identification" is pretty interesting.
I guess my only hangup with the OP was giving up with dramatic flair instead of asking if anyone knew of a way to get what they wanted to work. Maybe they already asked somewhere else, I miss things sometimes :)
