How do you goose-wing?

That doesn't look right. If I understand it, novice here, shouldn't the jib be all the way sheeted out opposite the main? I'm trying to get the jib out of the wind shadow from the main right? Should the wind be directly astern or slightly port or starboard? The main gybes and The boom goes flying if I don't keep the wind a few degrees off the stern.

I think you are almost there. from where you are now let the mainsail right out. Then steer slightly to the starboard. Then you should be able to let the jib out.

What I tend to do is this. Pull main into centre. The get the jib set first, let it well out. Then gradually steer so the wind comes across the stern. Wait until you see the boom move to the opposite side of the boat then you can safely let it out.

Hope that makes some sense!

Awesome thanks. Let the boom all the way out, but still either with the jammer closed or at least two turns around the winch right? The boom must stll be held tight even when running and sheeted all the way out correct?

BTW I have a few years experience windsurfing in Hawaii, but that is the extent of my sailing knowledge. I understand the hinge action of the boom in terms of physically holding on the sail and how that makes the board go, to put it simply. It's the same on a boat right? I cant just let go of the boom or I would get no resistance. So on the boat the same applies right?

The thing is that this type of boat the standing rigging stops the boom from going right out (we also have put an artificial stop in around 70 deg (off the top of my head) but it will do the same thing). It can be quite annoying on a real boat... we were on boat in Greece recently and I couldn't even properly set the sail on a broad reach because of the rigging in the way.

So you probably could actually just let the mainsheet go when you have the wind astern. The shrouds would keep the boom in place. (Probably not good practice though! - You could be putting a lot of pressure on your shrouds which they are not designed to take.)

So yes, best to keep some tension in the mainsheet and hold with the jammer - or you can put the mainsheet on the self-tailer.

That all makes perfect sense thanks! I believe I've got the goose-wing figured out by doing as you said, center the boom, let out the jib, turn so the wind crosses stern then let out the main.

So once I am here, it feels like its pretty easy to over sheet the jib and pull it right back over to the port side with the main. In order to trim from this point, should I first let the jib all the way out, then very gently sheet until I get max speed? Are the telltales reliable and do they work the same when configured this way?

At this point of sail the telltales will not tell you anything. Well if they do you are very lucky! They are looking at the aerodyanamic flow over the 'wing' but at the moment you are not using that, you are using the drag of the wind to push you along. So really you are just aiming to get the sails roughly perpendicular to the wind to make the biggest sail area.

In the next version we are doing some tutorials on sail twist and sail depth which cover some of this in more detail.

Thanks! This is all really impressive. I mean coming from a windsurfer I had never even heard of goose-wing. I was just reading about sailing this type of boat and came across the concept and wanted to see if it was actually implemented. It was a really nice surprise to see that you can do it. And the telltales working (or not) as intended is just great! The sail changing from wing to parachute, the motion of the boat going down the backside of a swell, its all just fantastic! I'll get a positive review up this weekend, well deserved and I wish you success!

By the way there is a somewhat active simulator community on reddit - https://www.reddit.com/r/SimulationGaming/

www.reddit.com/r/esail is available and would really help to get your product out there. I really hope you can develop this fully it will be amazing.

Hi ZeroReady - new sailing trim out today on the BETA. It would be interesting to get your feedback. I have been trying out Bear Island and the goosewinging was essential for me to be able to win. Don't know if that is a good or a bad thing!

Fantastic I'm looking forward to it this weekend! Cheers!
