Not quite, although he borrows his term from the same Irish/Scottish miner mythology that we do. It's a somewhat more well-known term here in Colorado (there is even a brewery that has been around for decades with the same name). Wikipedia Tommyknockers and you can read up on it if you like. They're like leprechaun miners or something.
