You can actually bait an attack and step out and if he doesn't combo get one swing in before you run again.
There are also a few moments where he pauses that you can get a hit in.
Overall, getting hits in as often as possible while avoiding getting hit by a combo is all it really takes. The bigger problem is often having enough damage to finish him before the timer.
As for a catch, not much, he is just high health and there are the light phases of the fight. As the light changes it activates bonus effects. Purple increases rage gauge so you can get some refill at that time. Green starts a decent heal per tic regeneration which does heal black thunder but it isn't as much as it would heal you. Yellow is when you do a lot of extra damage, so try to always be able to damage if the light goes yellow. And red is when black thunder does massive damage. Never get hit while the light is red, except maybe for a medusa head if you have poison eater of some type.
The light isn't really going to change the fight much which is why it barely needs to be mentioned. You just need some decent hits to stagger him and then hit hard during the stagger and stay out of his attacks. The dragonbuster strategy is the most common solution because the fire tends to count towards making him stagger. And Kamas doesn't do great because the piercing and low damage per bullet don't cause staggers as often. You might use it, but you are probably going to drain your Kamas before it does enough damage.
I found it was better to play on the outside of the arena, see all the statue, link them in your head or in paint and do a circle, on the outward it is more safe, on the inward I was always getting mauled because I forgot there a statue behind me, don't use lock on when you try to kite him without running, you are slower that way, don't need to run to kite him, sometimes roll if he goes too close but that's it.
Oh yeah, on nightmare there is a boost on all candle wolf weapon and armor, it's a x3 if I am not mistaken, if you have his armor, it's a good thing to equip it, and I did not test it, but can probably be useful, having a t4+4 spear or above and when the blue phase hit, I think the ragemove can do a good amount of damage, and has a good range, but can't be sure it's good never tried it but it's a CW weapon so it should be ?
Edit : Medusa head seems to be better than massager, even on a shooter
but the maxed out Shooter with the kamas +8 uncapped should be enough.
