Thoughts on 41+?
I beat 40 yesterday and am curious what other people think about the gameplay from 41 on up.

I was probably going to wind up grinding mats until I had used everything up that I had access to, but decided to cut to the chase yesterday and go for floor 40, which I can say now I was probably way overgeared for. Floor 41 was a trip! I was like whoa are the floors going to look all spaced out now? Disappointing that after a lobby area you wind up back in 30s-ish looking art assets. Made it to 43 Seya and got steamrolled. 42 was easy but with my Katana doing like 1400 dmg whacking away on the first 2 enemies was like attacking a stone wall with a pillow. The first one wouldn't go down quickly and the 2nd one in the same bit got me. So now I gotta do what everyone else does to play which is - drumroll - repeat the same parts of the game over and over until I have slightly better gear.

So wondering if the upper floors are worth it in terms of entertainment value?

Any must see environment design up there?

Reflecting back on my first foray into the upper floors, it's kind of ironic that prior to that I was struggling with inventory space and trying to fix the bottleneck situation that happens when you get ahold of more common mats while you wait on metal grinds and gold chests and whatnot to allow you to spend those more common mats. It's ironic because as soon as you get access to the upper floors, all of those maxed out storage slots are moot since you can only take 5-7 items with you. In my case I chose 2 weapons, a set of armor, and 2 extra armor pieces with the Express Pass. If I could have taken some of the dozens of shrooms I have in my storage with me things would have gone differently on floor 42. It's just kind of funny that you end up agonizing over Death Metal and then you get to floor 41 and it's like you might as well have just left your storage at the vanilla level and not even expanded it - cause you can't use any of it anyway when it counts!

Another thing I was curious about - melee playstyle in the upper floors. What drew me to the game was the Souls-like combat and I enjoyed playing with the Knight's Set and lately with the Katana. I'm getting the sense that a lot of the playerbase in the upper floors walks away from that because melee encounters are seen as too risky to be worth the trouble - largely due to the fact that any mistake made in melee breaks your armor and on the upper floors you can't simply get around that by stacking sets in your inv like you can on the lower floors. I hear a lot of people mentioning the Night Scout set and talking about KAMAS. So does this game pretty much change play styles from Souls-like up to 40 and then from there on it plays more like Counter-Strike?

The melee still works okay, but it gets decimated by the ai using Kamas. They block forever and will shoot seemingly mid roll and block. Approaching any of the Kamas haters just sucks. So of course the way to deal with most of that is to take your own Kamas or other ranged weapons to shoot enemies before they know you are there.

As for going over floor 40. You sometimes have to find a trick you like or just be prepared for some very unusual fights. As for why people do it, they only go over forty if they are going to be trying to go as high as possible. If you really want to uncap some gear and aim for going to floor 100 or floor 200, then you go over 40. If you aren't going to be going there, then you are probably done.

Congrats on beating floor 40! I've not gone beyond floor 41 yet, but I've done a fair amount of research on other folk on streams/youtube. I'm waiting until I've uncapped my armour before going further because I get hit a lot more than I should; I'll need the extra durability. Also I need to get to floor 50 with no forcemen gear.

Most of the youtubers and streamers I've watched go to floor 60 and that's it. GRINN has been experimenting with a striker with flail and medusa's head, and given he's a fairly casual player it looks to me to be a good melee build for floor 50 to 60. AI kamas seem to struggle with medusa from what I've seen. That said, floor 41-50 is apparently harder than 51-60.

Thanks! Yeah yesterday I was like hmm.. free continue maybe I should give 41+ another go. Got a solo shelter and planned to use it after Lifeshroom wore off. 42 loaded with the Wanoki setup. Went after a dev hater right off the bat and got owned. I couldn't damage it with my 5star Katana. Used the free continue, skipped past the dev hater, got swarmed by 2-3 enemies right away. Beat them, but then a hater with a neon green KAMAS came out. Baited him in close, got him down to 10% health but he took like 12k hp off me while attack animation was finishing and wiped me out. Currently no coins to keep playing and no inventory space left since all my other fighters were for storage. Can't bail out the one stuck on 42 cause no coins left. It seems we are at an impasse for now.

I figure I might as well buy a 6star fighter but right now I can't since I can't unload my freezer inv into storage to delete a weaker fighter.

lol.. and my rewards box is overloaded by FORTY FIVE ITEMS so I can't even go to Ikegara to get the uncle death box to pop. I'm probably done for now until I finish replaying Killer7 at the least

1) The environments are the same. One new entertaining aspect is the 50+ boss fights with many screamers one after another. Other than that, it's the same. So you either want more of the same or not. Or maybe you'll want more after a short break.

2) You really should have bought the 6-star fighter before going to 40+, and leveled up the weapons.

3) And, yes, you need ranged options.

lol xD

For real though for now I'm literally trapped in the waiting room. I have 0 inv space in chars or in storage and 40+ items I have to empty out of the rewards box before I can even leave the waiting room. After the next TDM payout I can prob revive my char that has 52 inv slots. xD

Good info. Does sound pretty fun. Lots of upgrades ahead for weapons. I must say that Killer7 is a nice change of pace. I recently played the demo of The Silver Case and after playing that you can really see how much Killer7 was a direct progression of that for Suda51. Strangely enough a lot of the elements from the Souls games appear to have had their start in Killer7. And with this game, the Souls gameplay comes full circle.

I found out about this developer with Killer Is Dead. And I did note the Souls similarities in my review for Let It Die. But I haven't even considered that Killer7 had Souls-like elements. So it's a a very interesting observation.

Yeah, for sure! I was surprised but in Killer7:
You have to return to the spot where you died
You level up with the currency you get from downed enemies
Or you can choose to use it to make each attack stronger

I wonder if Miyazaki was influenced by it before he started coding

lol. I've heard the recent PC release of 1 was bad but Souls 3 and the PS3/PS4 games were free of that

How did you like Killer Is Dead? It was one of the last games I bought for PS3 before mine died. Never got a chance to play it after getting my PS3 repaired 3 times in a row. Thinking about getting the PC version but I just missed the sale. First Grasshopper game I played was Killer7 on the GameCube. It's crazy how good it is and it hasn't really aged at all because of the art style. Was way ahead of its time in terms of how cinematic it is, and it's all the more surprising when you realize their previous game was basically a visual novel.

I liked it. The combat system probably isn't that special by today's standards, but the game is very stylish and atmospheric.

dang. I'm looking at my collector's edition from PS3 right now but I can't play it since Sony can't seem to make a Blu-Ray drive that works for more than 90 days :steamsalty:

The game costs very little on sale. I thought it even went 85% off.
