COD 4 MP Crash... [Fixed, thanks all <3]
I recently downloaded/installed COD 4 from Steam and everything was running fine (I've played this game and uninstalled/installed it plenty in the past, although from a CD). I never play single player so I deleted the shortcut from the desktop, went into SteamApps and copy/pasted the COD 4 Multiplayer App to put a shortcut on the desktop. EVER since I did this COD 4 crashes on start up, or if I try and launch it from my steam library I get to the single player fine but it crashes when I go to Multiplayer on the main menu. I tried a system restore... I re-downloaded the game which took about 6 hours on the connection I'm on (terrible DL rates plus it's shared, although it plays fine when my roommate is offline), and neither of these steps have worked.

All I did was move a shortcut and I have no idea how this could change the way the game runs in any way. Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated.

Note: It does the same crash when I try and load dm1 files through COD 4 Player. I hear the error noise, but the error message is obscured by a black frame which is the COD 4 iw3whatever application.

Also.. I've tried launching this game from every which way. Steam re-install is the best bet at this point? When I tried launching iw3mp from the Call of Duty 4 folder I was told mss32.dll was missing when it is clearly in the folder. I tried some fixes for that problem that I saw on youtube to no avail.

what fixes have you tried. did you enable stereo mix? try to plug a mic and headphones in?

Yep tried that. Let's see.. I tried

Making a new iw3mp shortcut in the COD 4 folder
Completely re-installing the game.
The stereo mix/mic thing you mentioned
Windows restart
System restore

Somebody recommended re-installing DirectX9 which I will give a shot but probably not until tomorrow. Cheers

Verify the game cache. Update video drivers. Reinstall DirectX and try again.

Fixed the integrity of the game cache and that did the trick. Thanks a million man!
