I totally get why you’d prefer the more fun, character-driven campaigns from MW2 and MW3 or even the ridiculousness of Infinite Warfare’s Yolo mode. Those games balanced intense gameplay with memorable characters and sometimes even a touch of humor, which COD4 lacks in comparison. The original Modern Warfare campaign is more about the military realism and narrative of its time, but it doesn’t have the same emotional connection or pacing that the sequels offered.
That being said, there are a few things you could try to make COD4's Veteran difficulty a bit less of a frustrating slog:
Tips for Beating Veteran in COD4
Take Your Time and Be Patient
On Veteran difficulty, you're often just one shot away from dying, so patience is key. Use cover effectively and don’t rush — it’s about slow, deliberate movements and clearing out enemies one by one.
Use Grenades and Flashbangs
Utilize flashbangs to stun enemies, and grenades can be a lifesaver when clearing out groups of enemies. The dogs can be managed if you take advantage of these tools.
Watch the Enemy Spawn Locations
Enemies spawn in predictable locations, especially in COD4. Knowing where enemies will come from can help you preemptively take them out before they have a chance to shoot you.
Save Often (If Playing PC Version)
If you’re playing on PC, use save files and reload strategically when you find yourself getting wiped out by a wave of enemies or a dog attack.
Don't Forget to Use the AI Allies
In some missions, your AI teammates can help clear out enemies for you. Don’t hesitate to use them for suppression while you move up and take cover.
Replay Specific Sections
If there’s a specific section you’re getting stuck on (like dealing with the dogs), it might be worth looking for tips or watching walkthroughs on how to tackle them.
Enjoying COD4 (or Any Game) Differently
Sometimes we just need to take a break and approach games in a different way. If COD4’s campaign is frustrating, it’s okay to step back and play something else that resonates with you more. Whether that’s replaying MW2 or WAW or diving into the craziness of Infinite Warfare, you’re not alone in preferring the newer games for their pacing and storytelling.
It’s okay to take a step back and appreciate the games you love for their strengths, like the deeper narratives and character development in MW2 and MW3. Those games were definitely built with character-driven stories that hooked players. And, of course, Yolo mode in Infinite Warfare had its own chaotic charm.
