Cod4 keeps on crashing/hanging
This has been happening for a long time now, but i'm getting sick of it.

Whenever I launch multiplayer (this problem does not happen to single player), my game or launches with a black screen with sound playing, or launches with a black screen mouse and no sound, or launches properly but hangs after a minute if I haven't found a match yet.
Please don't say "plug in a mic" or "enable stereo mix", it WON'T WORK! I have tried it several times already, and I already have 2 mics anyway (on headset and on webcam).
Punkbuster isn't the problem either, it works fine and disabeling it before launching does not fix anything.

Thanks in advance!

...? How did explaining my problem fix your problem?

Just a thought, I had a black screen and hang freeze, in run typed msconfig, and stopped programs running in the background, it worked, just a thought.

Sadly it did not work. I've reverted my drivers back to the recommended one (I was running on Beta drivers) but it didn't fix anything.
Since I described my problem I got a new screen (2560x1440 instead of 1920x1080) and now I can't launch the game at all! Still the first 2 events after launching, but not the third anymore.

So somehow this seems related to the resolution, but enabling safe mode and trying whatever resolution is possible does not help.

Please anybody help, I just can't play anymore!

Is there no one that knows how to fix this? I can't be the first to encounter this in all those years can I?

Try lowering resolution. Also try headphones and mic. Or enable stereo mix. Verify the integrity of game cache.

If not sure how to do any of those google or YouTube.

Done all of them already, even tried fullscreen/non-fullscreen. Nothing works.

While in single player have you changed in game resolution to lower? Also go into your cod4 folder and delete the profiles and try that.

Well single player has no problems, I don't understand why lowering the resolution there would help me fix multiplayer. I will try to delete the profiles though. I'll try again tonight.

Not sure but then again not sure why using headphones solves problems but it does lol. Some people had issues similar and had to lower the resolution. And this can be done in single player.

If you get it working when ever you start game if it asks you if you wasn't it to optimize the settings click no. Almost every time I start the game it always says that. If click yes you can run into the same problem.

Have you googled or YouTube searched for same problem?
PureTryOut Jun 4, 2014 @ 6:15am
First of all yes I have Googled, first thing I do with all my problems lol.

Secondly, changing ANY setting in singleplayer will not change any settings in multiplayer. This is because they both use different config files (config.cfg and config_mp.cfg).

Thirdly, I always click no when it asks for safe mode, because it only resets my video settings and lowers the resolution back to 800x600 (which does nothing like I said).

So to sum it up, so far i've tried:
- Enabling stereo mix
- Plugging in microphone in the jack
- Safe mode
- Lowering resolution
- Windows XP compatibility mode
- Running as administrator
- Deleteing config file and start over
- Reinstalling DirectX
- Reinstall Windows (I had to for different problems, but it didn't change anything)
- Rolling back drivers
- Launching with mods and without

Absolutely NOTHING has worked... I still wonder why singleplayer works without any problems.

Not sure. Must be your end. First I am trying to help, second you will be surprised how many people don't google or try YouTube prior to posting or look thru the forums as there are many who have had issues.

Third. You did not state that you verified the integrity of your game cache or delete your multiplayer profile and retry. Or even deleting and reinstalling the game.

Forth I was not talking bout safe mode. There is that and then another that pops up that says things have changed would you like it to pick the best settings for you or something like that.

Eeuhm I sorry I don't mean to sound rude if I did.
Anyways although I haven't mentioned it, I tried the most common solutions now... I guess it's some kind of hardware fault (which I actually refuse to believe lol)?

Thanks for your help anyway, I don't think we can fix this :(
