I have uninstalled and installed the game.
I have just installed windows 10.
When installing the game punkbaster gave a problem, but I coppied a file from the internet into it which should have solved the pb problem.
just built a new pc and all the drivers are up to date.

what other steps can i take?

What I would do, is first off. Have you restarted your computer? I had to do that when going to Windows 10.

If that doesn't work, go into Sound <> Recording and if you didn't see a stereo mix there, then enable whatever pops up in the recording tab.

If your game doesnt start this for real fixed it for me
https://ccm.net/forum/affich-125400-cod-4-multiplayer-doesn-t-start

was so annoyed after trying to update punkbuster, change punkbuster files to add cod4 trying all sorts with nothing working.

on windows 10 do the same just go to start or press windows icon, search "control panel", go to "hardware and sound", double click "sound", go to "recording" tab, right click on "stereo mix" and click "enable" and voila cod4 mp starts up, magic.

Just like Tom stated

1.Go to Start then Control Panel
2.Double click on the Sound Tool
3.Click on the Recording tab
4.Enable the Stereo Mix

or

plug in a mic / headset also works

Imagine if a developer released a game today that would just crash at startup if no mic is plugged in. Those were absurd times lol

You have to update your audio drivers of your motherboard at last version...search on your mobo brand site...and than will appear the stereo mix option.
yeah i dont have the steromix or anything in the recording tab what do i do then?
