Punkbuster 404 Error

When I tried to launch the game for the first time, it installed DirectX.
But when it came to Punkbuster, the download/installment gave this error:


"New Version Download Failed

Downloading a global config file failed for the following reason:

The requested URL returned error: 404"

I AM connected to the internet, but this error showed up. And whenever I manage to open the game, it says:

"Error

Unable to initialize Punkbuster. Punkbuster is disabled."

The version of the Punkbuster is 2.7 by the way. Any fix on how to enable Punkbuster?

It's unsupported, disable it in the multiplayer settings and move on.

Did you replace pb files?, check this:

Download punkbuster files from Cybergamer http://eu.cybergamer.com/files/6409/
Extract and replace the files in (C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\call of duty 4\pb) or (C:\Program files\Activision\Call of duty 4\pb) if your game isn’t from steam.

It is disabled but it still shows up the error everytime I launch the game.

It annoys the hell out of me. Any way to stop that?

I used to have the CD but I never remembered it installing Punkbuster at all even after I patched it to the latest.

Strange, that was enough for me in the past. Then do what @NiBi said, download the files from Cygergamer (you can trust them, they host Cod4 tournaments and such) and replace the files in your "pb" directory.

It means if your game is from Steam is this folder "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\call of duty 4\pb" where you must replace pb files.

You clearly didn't read the comment fully. He said "... OR if your game isn't from Steam". Before he said the directory where the Steam version is located.
