You've tried the first method and that didn't work, so try plugging in a mic or download CoD4 X. Should fix things up ;)

Go to goo gle and type in Cod 4 X client and download it. Extract the files to the game location, so wherever your steam library, then common or something, then COD4 etc. Once they're extracted just click on the install batch file then run the game and you can play multiplayer on active servers without bugs and issues :). There are better instructions on the site but it's pretty simple to get installed. Comment back if it works out for you.

CoD4 X is a mod that fixes common bugs and issues with the game such as the error the OP was having. Go to google and search CoD4 X and download it. Should solve your issue ;)

The batch file won't even run for me. I get "Updatefolder not placed into cod4 directory" even when run as an administrator. I still can't launch mp.

Because you haven't placed the folder inside the zip file you downloaded in the right directory. Make sure the folder called "cod4 x_client" (without the space) is inside your CoD4 installation folder. Then run the batch file again.

Yea like PTO said, you have to make sure the .bat & source code files are in the game directory. Go to your steam library in the desktop app, and check to see where your game library is located. By default it may be in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\common\COD4 or something similar. Once you dump the zip contents into that folder, run the .bat. After that you can run COD and all will work. Hope this helps a bit :steamhappy:
