Just got the game yesterday and I tried playing some Multiplayer but, All the servers names are called " Uninstall 1.8 " or say " downgrade 1.7 " When I click on any to join a game, a window pops up saying the following " You are about to downgrade CoD 4 to version 1.7 and reinstall CoD4x18 community patch. Doing this will fix all issues brought by recent Steam Updates, you will have access to big serverlist and your profile will be restored. Do you want to continue ? " If I click continue will this fix the problem of Punkbuster not being supported ?

If I click continue and install it Is that it ? or do I need to download more files after downgrading to version 1.7

No, it won't solve Punkbuster issues. You'll need to download the PB files yourself and install them manually if you want to play on servers that run PB.

Also, unless those downgrade servers have been updated recently, the version of CoD4x they install is rather dated. You won't be able to play on a server that is running a newer version than the one you have.

I downgraded CoD 4 to version 1.7 and reinstalled the CoD4x18 community patch but, now no servers show up. Will I download the Punkbuster stuff ? Will that make it work ?

That's odd. But, I actually have seen that happen before on my friends PC with older CoD titles. Try deleting your servercache.dat file. It's in your root CoD4MW folder. If you still don't see any servers after that, manually update CoD4x from the link above.

Installing PB couldn't hurt so I suppose you might as well update that too. Honestly, it shouldn't matter, afaik. I've never bothered with PB.

Should I follow these steps

1) Install CoD4 from steam
2) Launch multiplayer
3) Enable console in settings
4) Open console with Tilde (`) key
5) Manually connect to any C4S server by typing one of the following commands into the console

/connect 178.33.157.21:28958
or
/connect 178.33.157.21:28953

Go ahead and try it. C4S servers are good. Make sure you add it to your favorites. =)

BTW, what version number of CoDx is displayed in the lower right hand side of the MP main menu? If it says 21.1 and you still don't see any servers, deleting your servercache.dat file should with fix it. If you still don't see any servers after that, I'm out of ideas.

Edit: Also, make sure in the server browser you don't have Source set to Local or LAN :P

Displays 21.1 in the lower right hand side. I tried connecting manually to them servers First one worked but, it was just full of bots The second server wont load It says " Server connection timed out " Then I went back to my filters I changed the Punkbuster option to "All" and a load of servers popped up. So, I think Im good. Just wondering about punkbuster though Do I really need it ? Is there many cheaters/hackers in games ? Should I bother with Punkbuster downloads ?

No, you don't need PB. PB is ancient and hasn't been updated in years. Most servers use CoD4x anyway.

And yes, you will come across wallhackers and aimbotters from time to time. But it's not often in my experience.

I do find it interesting that the servers popped-up after you set the Punkbuster option to 'All' in the filter settings.
[[ Edit: After messing around in filter settings I noticed if you set Punkbuster to On while the Source is set to CoD4x, you don't see any servers. Maybe that is what was happening to you before? Also, the All setting for each option seems to mean 'All with and All without'. So in this context, setting Punkbuster to 'All' will also show all the servers that *don't* use it. ]]
