HOW TO GET COD4X/MULTIPLAYER WORKING 2022 - NO MANUAL DOWNLOADS/PATCHING REQUIRED

Edit : Don't click the links in the comments, this is for windows only, you do not need to manually download any files

1) Install CoD4 from steam
2) Launch multiplayer
3) Enable console in settings
4) Open console with Tilde (`) key
5) Manually connect to any C4S server by typing one of the following commands into the console

/connect 178.33.157.21:28958
or
/connect 178.33.157.21:28953

6) The required files will download and you will be prompted to downgrade your version, click yes to any box that appears
7) Relaunch cod4 multiplayer, you will now see Cod4x 20.1 or higher in the bottom right
8) after clicking join game ensure source at the top is set to "Internet COD4X"
9) Done, multiplayer is back!

thanks, this does not seem to work for me, im sure it probable work if using windows but mine it downloads the files but does not prompt me to install after download, instead for a split second it close and then opens a loading screen for shipment map saying mod: cod4i then multiplayer closes down, i reopen multiplayer and still on 1.8 version. im using arch linux manjaro using steams proton 1.7 (modified Wine) anyone else had this issue? any fixes, help appreciated

i found a simple fix watch the vid and download the 1.7 executable file in the comments https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUPf-LISjsc the link attached to the vid is https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xObjeakxBBoTg2OHLX6J9qpYkmy9Vs1-/view - download the 1.7 version executable file and replace the one in your cod 4 installation directory for the one you downloaded i did this and it showed 1.7 i refreshed server list and over 1k servers appeared, i clicked one and it attempted to download something went black screen a couple times then eventually auto loaded back up in to cod4 multiplayer home screen with message appearing advising me "the server you are attempting to join requires a cod4x patch up date which is a community made patch update do you want to download and install patch update" or something along them lines i clicked it and it closes cod application and installs patch then advised me to re open cod4 multiplayer, i reopened it with new version in the bottom right will say 20.1 cod4x and you can join loads of servers that's what worked for me anyway. i hope this helps someone out there having the issue i had. if you need any help let me know and ill see if i can help thanks.

I cannot get the update to install on my COD 4: Modern Warfare. It NEVER goes to 20.1 or 2.0.1 or higher, it remains: 1.8.13620. How can I get it to update?
