Is the single player especially difficult?
I'm relatively used to shooters and would class myself as a casual gamer. I've finished games like Wolfenstein on the hardest difficulty.

For some reason I get killed A LOT in this game. Playing on second easiest diffkculty.

Sometimes frustratingly so, having to repeat little sequences again and again. Usually it's from a grenade, which sometimes allows me to throw it back, and sometimes gives me no choice. I find the cover system only works a few seconds til a grenade gets lobbed in.

Do I need to change my playing style and do more running and less hiding in cover

Or is it just a hard game

it's just a typical CoD game when it comes to overall difficulty in campaign, but I believe that hardened is very close to veteran in CoD4, whereas in many other CoD games, hardened stays at a properly balanced spot between regular and veteran. compared to the campaigns of more recent CoDs (MW2, MW3, BO1, BO2), I think this game's campaign is slightly more difficult, mostly due to how OP the frag grenades are. they were nerfed a bit in CoD: World at War, but it's actually a bigger problem in that game, due to AI's infamous habit of grenade spam (on veteran, in particular).

you can occasionally move around and change your position to avoid them sending grenades. try taking cover and don't stay at open areas for too long when there are many enemies nearby. you can also use your frag grenades (preferably cook them a bit) to take out enemies at corners and behind objects. flashbangs are helpful as well, where enemy AI basically cheats on veteran difficulty and starts firing as soon as they see you.

i agree with the comment above, it is a typical cod when it comes to overall difficulty, but veteran can be tricky at points. but since you play on regular, it shouldn't be too much of a problem.
however, if you're playing passively (hiding in covers until you kill all enemies), this can be an issue on some levels, since on some levels enemies keep infinitely respawning until you reach a certain point on that particular level, so it's easy to get overwhelmed and naded. so try to be more aggressive.

Interesting. I suspected unlimited resoawns until you reach a new checkpoint. Thanks for confirming.

There are few hard missions but not as many.
