The game is 10 years old and competitive scene is long gone. 95% of the servers are TDM. SnD is nothing more than TDM with 1 life. If you found a vanilla softcore server that is active 24/7, then that is even rarer than finding an honest politician. If you find TDM boring then you would probably do better to go back to consoles. I dont think youre going to be happy with what you find in the PC scene. The clans are more "communities" than anything. There just is no real degree of clan vs clan scrims any more.
Now with all that said, if you can get past yourself, there are a ton a great servers and players still out there. There are over 400+ custom maps and of course mods. Lots and lots of mods. Gungame, paintball, freeze tag, StarWars etc etc etc. This is not the same COD from just 7 years ago. It has evolved and morphed into something entirely different. Which is probably why it is still so popular.
Our server is a modded/ranked HC/SC hybrid. It is pretty popular, but it runs TDM rotation. We have about 70 maps in rotation, and at the end of the round the server gets to vote for the next map.
Best thing to do is sort your browser by ping and start trying different servers till you find something you like. Add that server to your favorites and youre good to go.
"boring" was rather an overstatement, I should have said I am trying to get all my challenges complete (completionist elitist).
The thing I am conserned by with custom servers is that sometimes they reset your profile ( I may be wrong). I just unlocked the golden shotty, so I am hesitant to risk losing all my progress. Do you have any info on that matter?
Also, whats your server's IP? I'd like to try em out!
- Yes
- Yes if you look hard enough, I could hook you up if you're interested
- Yes to both if you look hard enough, usually the clan/comp scene will also be your cod4 community.
Dunno what these guys are saying, but like I said, they have their own clans and servers and thats their own communities, you'll find that in all of the FPS PC games, Part of a NA clan called Nameless Noobs, they're pretty decent, and we got a few servers in NA for cod4, feel free to check em out
For a competitive scene, there's a Promod Discord that does promod pugs daily, sometimes even CoD2 on Fridays
Here's a discord invite link, lotta ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ but everyone loves the game, some a bit too passionate if you know what i mean

as far as looking, if you show all the servers you can set the filter to not show empty servers. i like to show full servers at least cause if they are full and actual players then it probably indicates a good server and one i would want to try out when has an opening.
from there you can then click on the gametype tab and it will short the list out by gametypes.
gametracker is not the best but it does some justice and you can also find servers there.
there are clans still and if you become a regular on a server and enjoy that server you should consider looking for there website and joining. from there you can look up what is required to join the clan or help moderate.
as for clan wars, not to much but there are some. just have to get the clans interested. just not common now and most dont host so its all a matter of finding a clan, and setting up rules and such. problem is that, you only have a few clans left and they all run there own server and gametype. a couple might be known for there great freezetag server, a couple might be known for high jump, one might play SnD, another promod etc. so most dont want to scrim for a gametype they dont play.
i say just get used to playing what servers are there and have fun. you make a statement " Kind of makes the games super EZ with no challenge." first, its old so personally i say just dont worry about the challenges as much as playing. sure you can look them up and see. go for shotgun kills etc. but dont stress over them. maybe someone or a friend will join a server with you in SnD and let you plant etc. but really, dont worry as much. also if you feel its EZ, then do different things to challenge yourself. use your worst weapon with the worst perks you can think off for instance. or no perks at all. do a knife only, or clay, nades etc. i have done knife only one time as the few players playing at that time all where not doing as well. it was a FFA high jump server and score was first to 50. i ended with 42 kills or something and half that in deaths. and most of the players where all in that score. so it was competitive. where as the round before the next highest player maybe had 10 kills.
just a thought anyways. also cod waw is similar and a lot of fun as well.
What I've been doing is counter sniping with stun + m1014 loool. It's hilarious to see them freak out as you charge them.
Yeah I find cod is a great fame to hop on a few hours at a time just to blow off some steam. Nothing like going on a 20+ ks with a shotgun on overgrown. Mmmmmm
