PUNKBUSTER (New Version Download Failed)

Trying to install/update Punkbuster so I can play online multiplayer and I get an error:

'Downloading a global config file failed for the following reason:

The requested URL returned error: 404'

How can I fix this?

For a definitive fix, you must replace the PBSetup .exe file in the game's PB folder with the latest version, found here in the PBSetup section: http://www.evenbalance.com/downloads.php

Create a New Folder named PB for organizational purposes, and extract the downloaded .ZIP file's contents to it.

In COD4's game file directory(Steam/SteamApps/Common/COD4 or similar), locate its PBSetup .exe file in either the PB or Install subfolder. Delete this version, and copy the new PBSetup file to it.

On startup, since the latest PBSetup version is now present, it will no longer fail the update check. Click Quit or X out to complete the game launch process.

PunkBuster itself will still not work due to a lack of support, hence it is disabled. Also bear in mind that you will have to repeat this fix process if you reinstall the game or verify its file integrity in the future.
