A few questions about the game...
I'm a fighting game player so i'm really looking forward to playing this game but i've never heard of BattleCON before. How popular is this game? Will i be able to easily find opponents? When will it be released? How steep is the learning curve? Is it P2W?

I can only speak for the offline version.
The learning curve and skill gap is based on your intelligence compared to other people since it's a turn based game.

The game is a strategy game where you have a limited amount of options per turn, and after you choose 2 cards to use per attack, you can't use those cards again for the next 2 rounds (unless you have a special ability that lets you grab cards from the discard pile)

Because you can't use the cards again for the next 2 rounds, you have to think through.

1. What cards does my opponent have? (In a fighting game if you got knocked down, you have to predict if the enemy will either grab you, crossup, hit you with a low attack or an overhead.)

2. What cards do I have? (In a fighting game you choose if you want to use a wakeup attack, block, normal attack, or grab when getting up,)

You then use these to deduce which move you're going to do, typically picking one that has the likeliest chance of success, but you also know if you're too predictable the enemy might counter it, so if you think they will try to counter you instead use a move that will counter that counter. (So if you knew someone was going to grab you in a fighting game, you will instead grab when getting up or do a wakeup attack.)

But every move you use, can change your position on the board, so you have to not only think about what you want to do on the current turn, but what's your plan for the next turn or turn after? Your move might land a hit, but it could also land you in the corner. And your opponent might have cards that could destroy you in the corner.

After a single match you will have figured out the game, but each character is a lot different from the other, some of them take many matches to learn how to play, while others take 5 minutes.

We can't predict how easy it will be to find opponents, some people might prefer the board game. I know I will prefer the board game. I am only playing online so I can always have someone to play with.

Wow i appreciate your explaination a lot... So it is like a real fight but it is fought step by step. This looks very intriguing because in classic fighting games you don't have much time to think about your next move while in BattleCON you have plenty of time.

Do you also know when it will be released?

At the beginning the game was tagged to be released on August 14th...but now we only see "August" month.
So we just have to wait.

I never thought this month would be full of (probably) good releases between Yakuza 0 (yeah I know a lot of troubles for this one on PC), Unavowed, Sword Legacy Omen, Phantom Doctrine, Death's gambit, Shenmue 1 & 2... oh and Monster Hunter World.

Oh i understand... In the meantime i downloaded the alpha version of the game from the official website and i've completed the tutorial few minutes ago. I need to get used to card games (This is the first game i try to play "seriously") and i think it will be a long journey...

Oh sad to hear that :/ ...Otherwise try to get a beta key for Magic arena (it's free also).
I've waited 2 or 3 months to get mine ^^' (but it's really a good game even in beta test).

But maybe that's a lot to understand if you have never played a card game before...
Still a very fun game too ! (yes it's maybe a bit hard at the beginning but after it is really good)

Anyways...can't wait to try BattleCON:Online as well ^^
It's been a while I really wanted a fighter card games (I've seen others...but they were ugly or not very friendly UI etc)
MirkoDMC Aug 8, 2018 @ 2:40pm
I saw Magic Arena and it looks gorgeous but like i said before i'm not good at card games. I'll stick with BattleCON to get the hang of the genre. Furthermore i chose it because i'm a fighting game player :D

Hello and welcome to BattleCon!

1. I would like to frame its popularity as quality over quantity atm. That is, not too many people are playing right now, particularly the online version, but those that like BattleCon LOVE BattleCon. I like to think we have a wonderful community, so hopefully once it gets some Steam exposure we will have quantity as well as quality!

2. Finding opponents depends on the time you are on. There are still a few periods of the day where no one is queued, but if there is you'll be queued in seconds (unlike Fighting games you don't need an opponent with 4 bar connection to play a good game, lol). We also have an official Discord I can link, where there is a Looking for Games channel. If you want to play and are not bumping into anyone, you can send a message there and someone may hop in.
Official Discord: https://discord.gg/ThVvNdE

3. Already answered, some time this month! But there's the Alpha which you found and in the Discord you can bug Seki (the developer) for a Steam Key if you are itching to play it through that now.

4. The learning curve comes in stages. When I am teaching the game I find it doesn't make too much sense until the player has played a few pairs and seen a few turns act themselves out. After that I think it is pretty easy to grok the mechanics, though. Learning the real fundamentals (hint, it is all about the Base pentagon at first, which bases beat and lose to which bases!) takes a bit longer, and then REALLY getting good can take some time.
There's a surprisingly high skill cieling to this game, despite its lack of mechanical skill and tons of 50/50 situations. That comes out by being able to read an opponent and most importantly, learning to plan multiple steps ahead.

5. It is not pay to win. It has the League of Legends system where some characters are free to play and you get characters permanently with ingame or real currency.
Recently, 4 great beginner/fundamental characters had their in-game price reduced from 1000 to 700: Hikaru, Kallistar, Eligor, and Shekthur. You may want to check out these characters if they are on rotation, as they are a good way to start diversifying your collection.

What sort of fighting games do you play, and what are your favorite characters/archetypes? Perhaps I can suggest some current BCO guys that have a similar feel to them.

Thank you for your reply, it sums up everything i wanted to know about the game :D

I think i'll join your Discord channel to search for matches, in the meantime i'm practicing against bots trying to figure out every mechanic of BattleCON. I'm having fun so far so i hope i'll stick with it for a long time...

Regarding your question: I play every kind of fighting game but i mainly play fighting games in which you need to have solid fundamentals like Street Fighter and Tekken. I rather use fundamentals heavy characters like shotos (Ryu, Akuma, E.Ryu and so on) or very complex characters like Gen and Rolento (Speaking of SF). My absolute favorite characters are Rolento from SF and Kazuya from Tekken.

I've also seen the screenshots on the store page and it looks even more amazing than the alpha version :O

I am glad that I could help! :)
Feel free to add me on Steam and we could play a few rounds some time if that would be of help in grokking the game in a low stress environment.

Unfortunately the simultaneous turns of BCO means you won't find a character with tools like Electric Wind God Fist! I will say though that the nature of character complexity means that there are many low difficulty characters that rely heavily on fundamentals (Hikaru and Eligor spring to mind), and many high difficulty ones that sacrifice raw power for more tools and mix up options (Khadath and Riflam).

There are some matches on youtube if that also helps with picking out prospective characters. a channel called fasthippy commentates his and other people's matches, the official youtube channel Level99 Games has consistent content, and I upload high level tournaments I organize (but alas have no time to commentate).

Yeah i'd like to play with a real opponent because i don't think bots are good enough to learn the game. Many times i made wrong moves that could have easily been avoided by just get past me thanks to Dodge but nope, they just retreated and got the damage...

I'm currently playing with Michail and i like it (is the only character i've tried so far). I'm also trying to study every character to know what they are capable of. I'd like to try them all but of course i can't because you have to buy them.

Yep i saw some videos but being my first experience with a card game is a bit difficult to understand what's going on and why they're making those decisions, despite this they're fun enough to watch especially if they're commentated.

Can you link me your YouTube channel please?
Zerokura Aug 9, 2018 @ 11:09am
i watched alot well maybe not alot of video of the bored game and this online game. finding out its coming online got me happy plus its free ^^ heehee i love free stuff since you dont have to feel bad if you dont like it. but because its free i can get my friends into playing it with me so i enjoy that. I love the video from Watch it played it i think thats the channel name but the host does a video on how to play/set up the game of battlecon so i learn to play from their. Battlecon is like fighting chess and i think one of the starter chr use like magic element to boost different states am looking forword in trying her out. Oh but is their going to be like a campain acrade kind of mode if you dont want to play other people.
13ird Aug 9, 2018 @ 12:32pm
If there is going to be a campaign or arcade mode it will not be implemented for some time. The dev's main goal at the moment is to flesh out PvP as best they can. There is currently an A.I for most opponents, but it won't really challenge you. A good way to see interactions and move around the board though.

There is Friend Battle though, so one can play with people they know instead of having to queue into the veteran monsters at first.
MirkoDMC Aug 9, 2018 @ 1:40pm
A story mode would be sick (Better if it has cutscenes). Also a survival/arcade mode which rewards you with in-game currency to buy characters would be pretty sick. Having a "player match" mode will help new players to not get wrecked by veterans lol

BTW PvP is the core of this game so PvP comes first and then everything else... I'm also very happy to see it will be cross-platform!

Same here (maybe a little less than I was before).

Otherwise there is a "play the game" button...but it says the game is not yet released (on Steam).
Maybe we have to wait few minutes/hours ?

Now the game is in the released f2p tab but it's not downloadable yet. I think it will be available in few hours, or at least i hope so :D

EDIT: The alpha version of the game is not playable anymore, when you open the game a message pops up saying "Please wait while you are reconnected to the server" but nothing happens. At this point i think the Steam release is very very close...
