Jump scare prevalance?
So, I tried out the demo, and I'm curious if the rest of the game has a heavy emphasis on jump scares? Nothing against them, I like FNAF after all, but this game seems like it could be nice and atmospheric, and doesn't really need them to build spooks. Are their use steady through the rest of the game, or does it get into a comfortable pattern of trusting atmosphere more?

Most of the game it gets into a comfortable pattern of trusting atmosphere more. A jumpscare here and there !

I don't know what this guy who replied before me was playing, but is sure wasn't this game. The entire game is jump-scare city. I just about gave up on playing it at one point (during Chapter 6) because the damned jump-scares seemed to be happening every other minute. ♥♥♥♥ gets tiring.

And it's such a shame, as well -- This game has some genuinely good atmosphere, but the devs decided not to lean into it, and just rely completely on spooky ghosty boys going "BOO!" So disappointing...

This guy, me and myself, has played these titel for more than 80 hours. There are a few well-dosed jumpscares here, yes, approximately 5-6, but i've survived them although my heard isn't the best anymore. Mr. twisted-hammer is propably a very sensitive guy. And i'm soo cold that even Visage is nothing more than Disney's Bambi for me ;-))))

Ah, I see now — I think there's a disconnect in what you and I are calling jump-scares.
It sounds to me that you're basing the term jump-scare on whether or not it actually succeeded in scaring you. Whereas I was referring to all instances where the game ATTEMPTS to scare you in a particular way.

Specifically, a jump-scare is where the game attempts to frighten you with a quick jolt of fear. Jump scares attempt to use the element of surprise to catch the player off-guard with something very sudden. Usually, it involves something jumping very quickly at the player, or a very sudden loud noise.

A problem with this particular game is that it tries to scare the player using that technique far too often, to the point where it becomes expected. Once this type of scare loses the element of surprise, it stops being frightening. That is exactly what happened in this game: It tries to surprise you so often that the constant surprises become painfully predictable.

The only times a Scare is Jumped at you, Is very small, Mostly in Nicholas's Sections, but even then there is like 1 every Nicholas Chapter, which is fine, The game doesn't focus on Jumpscares all the time.

I think you need to play through again if you think its only 1 a chapter lol. Its more like 5+ per Nicholas chapter. Random whiteman/woman jumping out or walking unnaturally across from you, furniture flying across the room, loud slamming of something falling in another area, it just goes on and on. Usually these events are also in addition to the usual "a scary thing is happening" stinger sound.

This game is full of jump scares. Such a shame. I grew pretty tired of a jump scare around each corner in Chapter 6.

Pretty decent game though, although not sure how the other dude in this topic has put 80 hours in this.

I know this is an old thread but I was considering getting this on the sale but that many jumpscares is a no. I don't mind a few well placed ones that basically are there to give me that fear of walking into a dark area etc. But I find jump scares annoying and the cheapest way of using "fear" since its just playing off natural body response. Its fleeting and not real fear imo.

You play Two characters ..
Adam and Nicolas

Each chapter you switch between the two and their Stories.
Adams Playstile is a sort of Riddle, Mystery, "Walking sim" (comparable to games like "Firewatch"

Nicolas' Playstile is Horror with minor riddle elements (A bit like "Amnesia")

The Horror parts have A TON of jumpscares... like ... A LOT!

At the beginning they are not "Scary" but more "startling":
You go into a room and suddenly all Shelves fly open combined with a violin "Sting".
You crouch through a low narrow passage and a ghost crawls at you and dissapears.

You get used to them fairly quickly though since they become predictable and are too frequent to let any tension build up in between.

BUT it is still a steal for 3 bucks on sale and definitely worth it.
