Free movement?
My first impression of this game is the free movement system just doesn't work.

I've always wanted a good Bomberman remake (or re-imagining), I'm suprised there hasn't been one to take on the mantle yet, it was a genius mp game back in the day..

..It shouldn't be too hard to recognise what made bomberman (in particular the one from the mid 1990's) work so well and then emulate that, with some new twists of course.. I'm just not sure the ability to move around within one square of space (and move diagonally) is a good new twist.

You know what this is?

It's the original Bomberman, which had free movement.

And that's Super Bomberman which also had free movement.

Bomberman Portable on the PSP also had it.

Super Bomberman R on the Switch? You guess it, free movement again.

So why shouldn't a game that's copying Bomberman use the same mechanics Bomberman uses? I'm a little confused here.

I probably didn't explain it very well, it's kinda hard to describe.. Look closely at the characters in this game (compare their movement to the movement in super bomberman for example), the characters in this game can move completely freely in any direction (including diagonally), the grid of lines/squares are just a guideline.

The character does not strictly occupy one square/space, there is a lot of free play within that one square, characters can occupy any part of the square, they can even move diagonally within it. As such, it doesnt play like you are moving up/down/left/right to different grid positions to avoid blasts.

When comparing the old vids with the new, perhaps the actual reason it feels different is because in the old version there were industructable blocks every other square which kept the characters on a more rigid movement pattern with no diagonals (like an actual grid).

Diagonal movement is the key thing that makes this game's movement notable in its difference. You can move between an indestructible block and a bomb here, which you couldn't do in the old games - your character was fully as wide as the squares you moved on - diagonal movement was only possible if you have at a block of 4 exposed squares, even one filled in would obstruct movement.
