Possible timeline clash with Valkyria Chronicles 2 and 4?
Spoilers Before Reading

Hey there just wondering. I've never played VC2 (only played 1 and 4) but I read that in VC2 that the 2nd Europan War is still going on 2 years after the events of VC1 in 1937 but in VC4 which takes place in 1935 at the end of the game you manage to get the Empire to agree with a ceasefire which says it helped end the war. Is there something I'm missing or did they mess up the timeline with these games? If anyone could give me some clarification that would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

In VC2 the EW2 is over, you don't fight the Empire but the Gallian Revolutionary Army (which is ruled by anti-Darcsen Gallians and secretly sponsored by the Federation). It's an inner conflict Gallians vs. Gallians.

The opening sequence of VC2 states "two years have passed since Empire invaded Gallia, but across the continent the fires of war still rage", together with map that looks like the war is still going and imagery of Imperial soldiers marching.

I wasn't sure so I just watched this let's play, relevant sequence at 5:00 - 5:18

I never actually played VC2, but "two years have passed since Empire invaded Gallia, but across the continent the fires of war still rage" It does not specify the same war is going on, only that war is still happening. I guess the imperial troops are a reference to the first game? dunno. Are they actual enemies in the game?

If you watch the video I linked, it's not a time skip from 1935 to 1937 before the phrase, but rather a year slowly changing 1935-36-37, while in the background Imp and Fed armies continuously move around and clash across the entire border on the world map.
Also I checked the original Japanese wording, and it heavily implies a continuous process, something along the lines of "between Federation and Empire the storm of war was still swelling by the blowing wind". I'm being overly literal here purposefully, the phrase they use basically means that the storm is continuing to blow and engulf things in its flames, as far as I understand it.

If there was still a war, it wasn't the same kind of war. Gallia and the Empire weren't fighting each other at the time of VC2. There's no Imperial enemies in the game, and you even get one character (Helmut) who's an exchange student from the Empire fighting alongside Gallians in Squad G.

The way I understand VC2 opening, Gallia simply became a neutral faction for the next 2 years after their successful homeland defense like it was before said invasion (maintaining sovereignity and neutrality by having everyone be a conscriptable soldier is if I remember correctly THE justification for universal conscription), while the big two continue their conflict.

And yes that would mean that VC4 is slightly cutting into the timeline with its temporary ceasefire. Not really any worse than the whole "Cordelia got overwhelming support" except oops she kinda didn't.

In VC4 Squad 7 DLC, there is a meeting between Claude and the Federation Ambasador. In the end he tells him to take part in a special operation and Claude refuses. Was this about the kidnapping attempt of Princess Cordelia? Claude seems to have known about the content of this operation to refuse so abruptly.

Townshend's "special job" seems to be almost certainly the Cordelia kidnapping, yeah.

I don't think Claude knew what it was, the game doesn't show any way he could've found out (and I have the feeling he'd be a lot louder about refusing if he did know). Our boy Wallace is just smart enough not to accept shady proposals from politician types :steammocking:

So basically what was said in VC2 is a bit too vague to fully pinpoint whether the Feds and Imps were still at war or not. Alright then. Still a bit odd but thank you all for your responses. It was pretty interesting.

Doesn't VC4 say something at the end about how the Empire was gearing up for another campaign?

I don't remember that sort of thing in VC4 ending, but in VC2 Helmut's post-graduation bio mentions him being involved in the preparations for a new invasion of Gallia, a project he no longer supports.

Sounds like VC 5 is coming lol.
The other possibility is that the Federation and the Empire are not in outright conflict but are fighting proxy wars like what happened in the Cold War. So possibly no overt hostilities but behind the scenes things might be happening.
