What does focus do?

I must've completely misunderstood the cube/robot guy. I thought focus was going to be bullet time, but nothing happens when I press the button. What does focus actually do?

You move slower. It's useful for navigating dense bullet patterns where regular speed would instead make you ram into them.
Remember how Unit Lulu sent at you walls with narrow openings to make you practice focus.

Yes, but those gaps were huge, so I moved into place and focused.

a extra bit of focus is that it massivly reduces spread of your attacks and makes your followers (asuming you have any) lock in place
