Haven't played Psychonauts previously...
As someone who hasn't played Psychonauts before (I know, I know), will one benefit from prior knowledge from the first game? Or can this be played/enjoyed without having played the first game?

I think that this game takes place right after you beat the first game. you can jump in and play this one but you may miss refrences to the game and you won't know some of the characters.

If you have time watch a letsplay or long play of the first game or play it for your self.

It has a very small intro that gets the point across, but it leaves out the majority of details. That, and it literally spoils the entire first game within the first minute.

I'd recommend playing the first game... well, first. It hasn't aged all that badly, and it's simultaneously one of the best and cheapest games on Steam.

Thanks guys, I'll have to get around to playing the original game first. I forget I even owned a copy already!

Did you pick it up while it was free on Humble Bundle?

DF has one of the cheapest backcatalogues on Steam, with Psychonauts probably being their cheapest one (which is strange considering it's probably still their best game). I'm not sure why they'd discount their games over time AND drop 90% off sales multiple times a year, but hey, I'll take it. ;)

Honestly I can't remember when I bought it. I probably just picked it up in one of the many Steam sales.

Also a possibility, it goes on sale for $1 frequently.

It used to be technically fine on modern Windows, but as expected, Windows 10 managed to ruin everything. Unreal Engine 1, Battlefront II's "Zero" Engine, and countless other engines that worked flawlessly for decades were ruined by the Anniversary and Creator's Update. If you run into compatibility problems, I may be able to help you sort them out as I dealt with many of them while trying to fix the game myself. The worst case scenario seems to be AMD graphics cards.
