If you have time watch a letsplay or long play of the first game or play it for your self.
I'd recommend playing the first game... well, first. It hasn't aged all that badly, and it's simultaneously one of the best and cheapest games on Steam.
DF has one of the cheapest backcatalogues on Steam, with Psychonauts probably being their cheapest one (which is strange considering it's probably still their best game). I'm not sure why they'd discount their games over time AND drop 90% off sales multiple times a year, but hey, I'll take it. ;)
It used to be technically fine on modern Windows, but as expected, Windows 10 managed to ruin everything. Unreal Engine 1, Battlefront II's "Zero" Engine, and countless other engines that worked flawlessly for decades were ruined by the Anniversary and Creator's Update. If you run into compatibility problems, I may be able to help you sort them out as I dealt with many of them while trying to fix the game myself. The worst case scenario seems to be AMD graphics cards.
