Using a small pickup truck
I am trying to figure out why you would NOT use the small pickup truck to haul your crops to market. My initial thought was that maybe maintenance would be higher on the trailer, but my maintenance bar isn't decreasing at all.

It seems that for the small investment of $30,000, you can get your crop to market about 5 times faster than using a tractor.

Am I missing something? Is a pickup truck the "best" first purchase you can make?

It can pull trailers, but it can also run into problems like:
1. not enough engine power to pull the trailer
2. not enough vehicle weight and brake power to control the trailer, e.g. on downward slope or at high speed
3. the trailer hitch might be so high that it lifts the back of the pickup

Sorry about the first comment, which was very mean. At any rate, I do like to use a pickup (the large one) for one thing--if I cut down a small tree, I can cut up the logs and put them in the pickup, and drive off to sell the logs.

No worries, I have thickish skin :)

Since I just started playing, and only had about 15 hours in FS17, I don't have any of the bigger trailers. I figured that the pickup would only be good for the small trailer.

However, I am wondering if the job might still be faster to use a truck and a small trailer going 4 times as fast, versus a tractor and a large trailer driving much slower.

I guess I will find out...

and you will find that the speed at which you can carry a pick up full of product 4 times quicker will not compare to hauling 56 tons of grain 4 times slower. You'll learn, I hope.

For the OP, I personally find it's worth it to haul crops with the largest trailer your tractor can pull. I typically just use a pickup for driving around the map scouting fields and forestry locations. Personally, I play with tons of mods. My favorite semi-truck is the NMC Griffin with the Semi-tipper 70000/6. I've found that this truck can easily pull four of the trailers at once connected with Fliegl Dolly for 280,000 liters of hauling capacity. If you want to stick with pickup trucks, the Scarok 4x4 is also really powerful and has a lot of customization options. A tip for using the modhub feature the game has built-in is to use the "x" key to cycle between top rated mods and all mods. This took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out, haha. There's really no wrong way to play this game. As long as you're having fun, who cares?

Well the pickup is a bit limited on the weight it can carry.
So for the start, going for a big trailer and a tractor is cheaper until you hit the horsepower wall and need a bigger tractor anyway.
So currently I am having a pickup with a 5th wheel trailer for running pallets of seed and fertilizer, as it is quickest way to get to the store and back with a quantity.

And in the later game, I haul multiple trailers at which point I am left to my semi truck to pull the entire thing for selling.
The classic of going big or going home :D
