There are many factors for crop yields. Field sizes. Different crops yield differently. Amount of fertilizing done. Lime when needed. Plowing when needed. Weeding when needed.
How are you determining that "the yield is terrible"? Have you done an actual calculation of a particular crop yield on a particular size field, to see what the yield is per hectare? If so, then you need to do the same calculation on the new field you are working. In my experience, that is the only reliable way to compare yields, assuming all other factors mentioned above are the same.
Well, this is a puzzle. So you have actually walked out to the edge of the Midwest field and it told you that wheat was growing? Only it didn't look like wheat?
If that is the case, then I don't have a clue what is going on with your new map. Maybe some map modders actually do mess with the functions and growths of crops. I have played several maps, and in my experience crops were always the same between maps. Sorry, can't help any further.
Actually, there is another thought. I use a lot of mods in my game. And I would say 1 out of every 10 or 11 mods I have tried over the years have turned out to be lemons. They function either poorly, or not at all. I actually tried a new mod today: a factory to create your own bio-diesel. Only there were no input markers/areas for loading the ingredients. I suspect the author just rushed things and didn't personally try out or verify their mod before publishing it. It happens.
How to explain it, just the pattern how it grows is like root crop, potato, sugarbeet etc. It is sparse that it is supposed to be. Also the amount of straw is less that it is supposed to be. I try to turn some mods off and see what happens.
