Precision Farming
When using the PF system do the fields slowly improve with each fertiliser and lime application or is it a one-off improvement the same for every planting. If it is then it's just a good way of saving inputs. Of course this could change with future DLC's

It's a multi-step system when PF is installed.
Spreading lime influences the PH value of the soil, and which PH value is the best for crops depends on the soil types the field is on.

Spreading any kind of fertilizer increases the nitrogen value in the soil depending on how much is spread.
Each crop has a best nitrogen value for growth, and most crops will use up nitrogen as they grow (some exceptions, like soybeans, can actually introduce more nitrogen into the soil).
It's usually the best idea to spread manure/slurry/digestate first, and then use liquid/solid fertilizer to reach the best nitrogen value for the planted crop.

I apply fertilizer initially prior to planting to bring the overall nitrogen level of the fields up. Then I use a planter that can also apply fertilizer when planting. PF then adjusts this application according to whatever commodity that I am planting.

So like Tankfried stated above, Soybeans don't require any extra nitrogen, so PF doesn't apply any more, unless the area is so low that it needs it.

Otherwise PF displays the target range for applications (fertilizer or lime) based on the soil type & the current condition of the various levels. You can see this display at the bottom of the Help display screen to the left.

So your pretty much saying that the PR system will give the best growing conditions for each crop planted but no general improvement to soil condition, which I believe is big thing in modern farming.

Nitrogen content and ph value *are* soil conditions, so I'm not sure what you're on about.
If you mean whether it's possible to change soil type or not, then no, that's impossible. It's rarely - if ever - done in real-life, either, though, because of the ridiculous effort that would require.

I think it does improve soil conditions in that you don't use as much inputs (fertilizers & lime) with PF. It constantly adjusts the usage according to the soil conditions.

And each crop has a different requirement for inputs based on the plant itself & the soil type.

But no they do not yet have factors such as runnoff or leaving stubble on the fields to help retain soil & moisture. You can buy planters that are basically no-till, which will save you having to run discs or cultivators over fields.

There is at least one mod that factors in the compaction that happens from constantly driving over the fields, & then it requires you to plow those areas more often.

Also, when the grant for PF was first released, Giants stated that there was more to be added over time. Now I am not sure if this will arrive with the new version of FS22, or if we in FS19 will see anymore updates to PF.

has anyone had any trouble with the add on, to precision farming? I haven't been able to use the geologist function, where I have in the past

when you write 'geologist function' do you mean soil sample/testing?

the add on has a built-in check to make sure it matches the version of precision farming, and the add on has not been updated since precision farming was. you can manually change a line to work around, though.

open the zip containing the add on, open PrecisionFarmingAddon.lua with a text editor like Notepad, then find the required version line and change it like so:

requiredVersion = "1.0.2.1"

depending on your system and software used, you may need to extract that lua file to another location, then edit it, then add it back to the zip, or you may just be able to edit and save it in place. i hope this helps!

yeah thats what I am meaning. not being able to use the geologist function, as it saves time doing this over doing a heap of individual soil tests when playing on maps that use big fields
