If you play right now KB+M don't go for a Wheel.... you'll get bored and it will sit taking dust in a corner within 1 week. At least buy a gamepad... it could be used for 99% of games whereas a wheel is only kind of "pro" gear which mean dedicated players to lots of sim games.
I do have a wheel and even a wheel stand in front of a 1m20 screen... it sits taking dust because I'm not enough dedicated and prefer using gamepad from time to time.
But thats my opinion ;)
It can handle all the tasks in the game with just a few extra buttons from the keyboard, and the driving precision is more than good enough.
Meanwhile, a wheel + pedals offers you a lot of driving precision that is simply not needed, while you still need to use keyboard+mouse for anything that is not driving.
I second this.
A regular X-box controller is plenty for anyone who isn't a die-hard sim fan. The problem with wheel/pedals is that they take up considerable desk space, and if you have to use your computer for other things (as in anything that doesn't require a wheel) you'll be constantly clamping and unclamping the wheel to your desk. This gets very tedious very quickly, which is why so many steering wheels end up gathering dust in closets. I know from personal experience.
I have 2000+ hours across games that support steering wheels, and I would never trade in my simple game pad for a steering wheel setup: at least not until I have enough disposable income to own a separate computer 100% dedicated to steering-wheel sims.
I did start simply with the Logitech F310 (about $20 US from Amazon), back when I bought FS15, and even that made things a lot more fun and smooth. Sometimes I still use that if I don't have the time to set my full dashboard up. If you start with something like that, you will be able to decide if you want to upgrade to a wheel setup pretty quick. By the time FS17 came out, I already had a G27 for Raceroom and Euro Truck Simulator 2 and quickly found that to be a stone groove. Especially after Mogli's Gearbox Mod came out. (Those were the days).
There is a lot of better equipment out there, but G Series wheels are a good value and work just fine. I let the e-sports guys buy the "direct-drive" and handmade expensive stuff.
But my advice would be to get a controller and see how that fits you. With some time spent button mapping, you will definitely enjoy that. (And so will your Carpal Tunnel). After a little while, you'll know if you want to go with a wheel. Also FS22 will be out soon and there will be plenty of community feedback and support if you decide to get that and go the wheel route.
I was thinking about that @ravensview. I'm not sure if FS could support another controller (I already use 3), but perhaps with some creative button mapping, I could add that to my setup. I use a powered USB hub to take some of the load off of my computer.
Not to mention the flight sims I already have. If I do it and get everything to work, I'll post a setup guide though. lol
