Hauling small logs
Hello-
I've been cutting down trees on my land with a chainsaw. Then I cut up the trees, and I end up with some large logs (too heavy to pick up by hand) and some small logs.

I've been loading the small logs onto a small Strautmann trailer, with sides, but only "one level" of sides (not the two or three you can upgrade to). I like this because the sides of the trailer are low enough that I can drop logs in, and high enough to keep the logs in.

It can be frustrating, though, because it seems like the bounding boxes on the logs are kind of buggy, and there seems to be a strange limit on the number of logs I can put in the trailer, even though visually I think more logs should fit. All of a sudden there seems to be a force field and I can't put any more logs in. I was wondering if anyone else has been hauling small logs, and how they do it.

BTW, I've been picking up (and hauling) the large logs with a Stepa crane/trailer, if the ground is level enough. If there are steep hills I may need to use a tractor with some other kind of tool, but I haven't tried that yet.

Edit: Other thoughts about this: It seems that the Strautmann trailer is not meant to haul logs, but crop, chaff, woodchips, etc. It might make sense to create woodchips...

Hi,
Using a tipper/grain cart to haul logs can be an ok way to clear a few trees, not overly effective on a large scale. For a mid sized operation the crane trailer you mentioned or the semi log trailer & tractor w/log forks are prob your best bet to haul logs without using mods. A tree harvester would be the choice of larger ops. Depending on your equipment set up/operation scale running logs through a chipper into a grain cart is another option. Chipping tends to not pay as much as whole logs, but some find it easier to process.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, it definitely helps. Since the OP I also tried moving large logs with a Fliegl long neck gripper attachment.

That machine is tricky to use! You have to catch a large log just right, and then all you can really do is drag it. If the log is too small, is doesn't get gripped by the claw correctly.

Actually that's true of the Stepa, too. If found some instances when it made more sense to break a log down by hand with a chainsaw and carry the pieces, because the Stepa had trouble gripping a long skinny log.

Some kind of brute-force bulldoze kind of a tool for the tractor may also be effective in moving large logs around, when the Stepa can't get to them. I guess that's what you meant by log forks; I'll look into it. Thanks again.

Glad it helped some.
By log forks I meant the front loader attachment for tractors that's designed to pick up logs, located in front loader tab (you;ll want to make sure you have a tractor with front loader option turned on when you purchase it from the shop) The CSZ pack (or CZS can't recall off hand) mod in modhub is light years better than the in game log fork.

If you want to farm together I could explain all the logging equip in detail. If you like just send me a steam friend request & load a map next time we're both on.
One other thing worth mentioning I strongly prefer an xbox controller over keyboard & mouse, seems significantly easier for logging equip.

Thanks; I do have an XBox controller, just haven't gotten around to using it with this game! I'll give it a try.
