Is there any major benefit to keeping the farmhouse?

Other than sleeping so you don’t have to work at night (which I don’t love)? Just sold mine for wads of cash.

Also, how is gameplay effected when you allow? I assume growth etc, progresses at whatever time rate you set?

Waiting for a sleeping bag, tent, or small log cabin mod that does the same thing. ;)
