Gears
didn't Giants say they were putting gears in the game? What happened to that? I would love to be able to put my equipment in reverse using my shifter on my wheel!!!

Really big machines like combines are almost always some variation of hydrostatic or infinite drive with 2 or 3 forward ranges you can manually pick to go from road to field speeds.

Any tractor bigger than 80hp these days and you'll struggle to get a pure manual transmission.
Most at the low end are push-button gears in each range (think between 4-12 gears depending on the tractor) with 3 or 4 manually selected ranges and a manual forward-reverse shuttle selector.
Most have option packages to have the entire transmission electronically controlled. You might have a manual shuttle still but all of the shifting is done by you asking the computer to please make it happen.

FYI, pure manuals are great for other situations, but not well suited for field work aside from the fact they almost can't overheat themselves (i'm assuming your auto works well - some of them especially from the late 90s were garbage and we're not discussing the random sensor failure lights they tend to all flash at the worst possible times).

Say you've got a tool that you want to run at 6mph, the gear that gets you moving at 6mph is probably either going to be hard to start off in or leave you running at 2200rpm wasting fuel. We never cared in the past because fuel was cheap but these days fuel saving is as important as anything else.
Yes you can put on some revs and feather the clutch or shift in the field but you've gotta be careful and quick or you break things, especially if you've got a novice operating it like a hired worker.

With the auto you just start in a good lower gear, get to speed using whatever other gears you need, then drop to the best gear to hold that speed/produce the power you need/save fuel all with button pushes. A lot of systems these days will even just pick the best gear for you if you want - the computer knows better than we do where the best range is for the load it's seeing.

Btw in north america at least, the dissapearing manual is being sped up by the licenced truck driver shortage. Vegetable farmers can't always get the trucks they need and the crop can't wait to be harvested, but you can hire anyone with a basic licence to drive a tractor to haul your crops so those guys buy the fastest moving, simplest to operate machines they can.

While i understand most implements and trucks are going automatic these days, not ALL are. I learned on a '30s model Super A back when my uncle told me i could drive it if i could crank it. I learned to drive road vehicles in a '49 Chevy PU, and big trucks in our early '60s model International extended wheelbase. Automatics may be the "norm" in Europe,, but in the US you'll still see more manuals, unless it's a big operation with all brand new equipment.

I guess we need a "Classic American Farming Simulator", because this all auto crap is boring AF and we can't even change from forward to reverse properly.

While defending the “simulation” aspect I do not believe something should or shouldn’t. It should always be somewhat optional or vehicle dependent. When I play Forza on windows/Xbox I put assist and transmissions as per vehicle a 1960 car wouldn’t have abs or traction so I play without it and a modern sedan may have these things so...

whether it be hydrostatic or manual, I challenge anyone to find me any equipment that you press the gas to go forward and the break twice to engage reverse.

I want gears not because gears, but because I cannot get used to pushing forward to brake. Brake is brake, that is "S" on the keyboard. Or the brake pedal when you use a wheel and pedals. I want just a "reverse" gear so I can reverse as it should be.

There was a manual transmission mod made for FS19, but it seems the mod was not really popular.

FS19 REAL MANUAL GEARBOX TRANSMISSION v1.0

Also, there is a Vehicle Control Addon mod which kinda simulates manual transmissions.

it's been an eternity since I used Windows, so I don't know if it actually is a thing, but you could perhaps emulate a reverse gear using something like autohotkey, that swaps forward and backward if you shift into your virtual, self made reverse gear.

Probably best to tie it to actual hardware, like a switch, have autohotkey listen to it, and switch input accordingly.

But again, this is just theorizing.

" We need manual gears in a tractor !! " .

Something that doesn't happen anymore irl .

Meanwhile , let's ignore all the other issues with the " sim " !!

the mod "TSX_EnhancedVehicle.zip" gives you diff locks, Shuttle "gear" (changing driving direction), hydraulics control, and more info about the vehicle.
Modesc:
"Differential locks and wheel drive modes for your vehicle. Shows more vehicle details on HUD".

I can't speak for anyone else (and I don't really mind hows things are), but from what I've seen in other games, like Snowrunner, too is that people seem to want gears for a better control feel, not because it's realistic.

Braking for reverse driving seems to be the most loathed aspect. I don't mind it cause I don't use a wheel and pedals, but I could see why someone could find it annoying to reverse with the brake pedal.
