plow completely flips the dirt over at a depth of a foot or more, cultivator just tills the top 6 inches or so.

What i have seen is that cultivator get the job done much faster than plow. Is there any reason at all to use the plow?

think of it as spading your garden vs hoeing it.

in game you get a get a higher percentage yield. but you can shut it off if you wish.

Crops like corn require the land be plowed after harvest or you lose yield on that field until plowed.

Culti-plow / subsoiler plows and cultivates simultaneously so I just use that (cannot creates new fields with culti-plow, though).

Plowed ground can be seeded immediately and doesn't need to be cultivated to remove the rows. Plows can create new fields and prepare the field for seeding. Subsoilers plow fields, preparing the ground for seeding but cannot be used to make new fields. Cultivators prepare the field for seeding but do not satisfy the need for periodic plowing if the setting is enabled, or after the crops mentioned above.
Plows require more horsepower and are very small in comparison
Subsoilers are slightly bigger and require less HP
Cultivators are larger and require the least HP
