Machines have way too little strength and the logs are overly heavy. I find it quicker to chop a tree into small pieces with the chainsaw much quicker, says a lot really.
The last few trees I've cut down I just pushed them out of the way as a whole tree until hopefully one day they will care to fix it.
My big breakthrough was reseating the log after I get the fork tilted back. Before I really try moving a log, I just open the fork up, let the log fall back into it, and close up again. This way, the log is resting on the fork's two immobile prongs. I also stick a big 'ol weight on the back 3-point. If I have a really hard time finding logs' center of mass, I'll stick on double wheels as well. And, truth be told, I'd rather move the truck to the log rather than the other way around.
These huge red trees are real monsters, though.

The logs are barely worth the trouble. Chipping the branches takes forever, too, even when they're free of ghosty bits. I have no idea what they're supposed to be. Their textures and such are just called volumeTree.
