how close does the extentiond need to be to thr reg silos

The silo extensions need to be close to your main silo. I don't think the game even lets you place one if it's too far.

Try placing one (but don't place it), if it shows as green then you can place, if shows as red you can't.

You can't daisy-chain them. It's apparently a radius around the central silo, whichever one you choose.
