Making hay
Is grass the only way to make hay? And do I have to use the tedder thing o the grass or does it just take longer to turn to hay without it?

Grass is only way and you have to use the tedder.
Hay is cut grass that has been "run" over with a tedder.

In real life we do not always use tedders lol. Most of the time you chop it, let it dry on it's own, rake it, (windrow) then bale. But I don't think the game works that way. I was an actual farmer for a time and I still cannot figure out how to make hay in this game haha. Just stays grass even after I hit it with a tedder.

There are also many types of hay in real life. Most is cut from alfalfa. Grass hay is usually reserved for calfs. Easier on the stomach.

If you are using Seasons then hay is different from base game. Seasons has two stages of moisture for grass. The first stage (wet) can be tedded to get it to the second (dry) stage. You then let it dry over time to turn into hay. Tedding the second (dry) stage of grass will do nothing. If your grass is not wet when you cut it then it will usually be in second (dry) stage and you won't need to ted. On the weather screen of Seasons you will see a row that indicates if weather conditions are good for drying hay. IRL we only tedded grass if it got rained on before it was dry. Tedding turns the standing hay so that the sun can dry the underneath portions. In Seasons, grass will start to rot (disappear) if it gets rained on so you need to take a look at the weather forcast before you cut.
