Should I use a weeder
I avoid the 20% loss by using a weeder.
But what about the crop destruction?

Get narrow tires and you'll be fine, won't destroy the crop.

Care wheels (thin wheels) will prevent crop destruction. edit:ninjaed

Or just turn it off.

You actually don't need narrow tires during the first growth stage which is the only time you can use the weeder

thanks all for your input

Related: do you only have to use a weeder once, or will weeds come back at later stages of crop growth, meaning I'll need to apply a herbicide even if I've already used the weeder?

How can I remove the weeds that appears after the first stage then?

Weeds appeared in my field during the last stage before harvest time.

Gotta use a sprayer for later stages.

A bonus to the sprayer is the weeds won't come back for a while.

I used the weeder in the first stage and the ESC menu showed I got rid of them. All the weeds came back in the 4th stage and I used the weeder again and it got rid of them.

I thought (like stated above) you had to use the weeder early, or the weeds became to diffcult for the weeder and you would then need to spray. Not sure what's going on.

I also tested the yeild of a field by not weeding and fertilizing only once vs weeding and fertilizing twice. My gains were 9640 and 10,400 respectively. not the 35% gains you are supposed to get.

The weeders' description in the in-game store says "Weeders pull out small grown weeds between crops" and "They can only be used in the first growing stages of crops", so your use of the weeder in the "4th stage" is certainly strange.

Maybe it really doesn't matter how grown the crops are, as long as the ~weeds~ are in their first stage of growth.

^^^ I thought it was strange too. I also thought it was strange that the ESC menu filter showed weeds, I weeded and got rid of them, but then they came back again before harvest.

The description is wrong (a typo). It should say the weeder can be used in the first stage of WEED growth (not crop growth).

Weeds have 2 growth stages -- independent of the crop stages.

If the WEEDS are in their first growth stage you can use the weeder.
If the WEEDS are in their second growth stage you have to spray them to kill them -- again, regardless of the growth stage of the CROPS.
Jocko Nov 21, 2018 @ 8:33am
That maked sense but what doesn't make sense is that they came back after being weeded once.

Great news. I was afraid buying a weeder was a waste of money, but if it means I can use it for all weeds (assuming I catch them quick enough) then I'll save loads not buying $2,400 pallets of herbicide.
