Early game too grindy
Compared to FS15 and FS17, it takes a significantly longer time to really ramp up and get going in FS19. It has turned into an actual grind, with me planting and harvesting just to stave off debt, let alone begin making a profit and gain the ability to expand my farm. Can anyone shed some light on how to be successful in this game?

I get defensive when I feel belittled or attacked. If neither was meant, then the posters should consider the "tone" they are projecting when they write.
Nobody is attacking you. We're just all a little bewildered as to how you're having trouble with this game, when there's so many options to make it easier.

I have played many MMOs over the years, including games such as Black Desert Online and Archeage. I am used to grinds, I am aware of grinds. I even enjoy playing Diablo 3, where the whole point of the game is to constantly grind! My current problem is that my "grind" is just to stay afloat. The goal of my original post was not to complain, even though many have taken it as such. It was to ascertain if there were other ways of being successful in this game that I have not discovered yet.
He's probably talking about Everquest, Runescape, or Maple Story. Games with "real" grind.

Selling straw is well-known to double the profits from planting grains. Not sure why you think it is just a side-line... If I ignored the straw, grain would be by far some of the worse crops in the game from a price per liter standpoint.
If you're fertilizing twice, and killing weeds, you should get three to four times as much money from grains as straw. Even if grain price is low, and straw price is high, you'll still get double from grain on a bad day. It's good you're selling the straw, but if you're making the same amount from straw bales as grain, then you're doing something wrong.

I've never tried horses, maybe on my next playthrough I'll give that a shot. Grass on its own didn't seem very profitable to me, but perhaps I was doing it wrong somehow. Even though I've been playing since FS15...
Turn it into silage bales if you want to make any money off of it.

If you're still having trouble, then put economy on easy. Start doing contracts. Lastly, you can use the money cheat.

I love baling. I love the grind! Gosh, I'm not sure what I said to put everyone in the impression that I don't like grind. So let me be unequivocal: I don't mind grinding. I am fully aware of what is inherent in a farming simulator!

What I do mind is a grind without progress. Making just enough money over a (real life, using the time controls) time period of 10 hours to pay the various expenses accrued is simply not fun. Is it realistic? I'm not convinced, but regardless it makes for a very poor gaming experience. I'd much rather the weather be more complex. Or soil quality. Or just about anything for that matter. Grind without progress sucks.

Grind where you see, if even only a little bit, of progress is awesome. It actually feels like what you are doing makes a difference. It feels like the economy is significantly harder from the previous games in the series... Proper balancing would dictate doing *something* to counter this. Like giving slightly more starting money. Or making something a bit cheaper, like starting equipment.

The baling idea was good, thanks to everyone who suggested that. In the past I've always viewed baling is a mid-game/end-game task after getting started with animals etc., and I've never done silage bales before. Now it is helping me make that little bit of extra cash so it feels like I'm actually progressing :D

Nice.

Also, I saw your question on one of the guides about why all the price difficulties weren't illustrated. I believe the prices are the same for the medium and hard difficulty, and that's why he only showed two different prices, instead of all three.
Ah, I had no idea! Very interesting...

Don't feel bad. I have been known to cut through a neighbor's field every now and then...

...without row crop tires!!! Muahahahaaaa!

LOL. It's summer time here and there's too much going on for me to grind through "properly" sometime after the Autumnal Equinox I will start a new farmer scratch farm and grind it out as I do enjoy that. In fact I have often pondered on how to create a Legacy Farm. Where you start with a very small farm with an antique equipment mod and slowly progress through the generations to the current date. That sort of grind I could do and I can see myself working on that project for years. Probably a topic for a different post.

Oh man, I know it's off topic, but do you have any mods you're thinking of for that? that's exactly the kind of gameplay I'm looking for. I hate starting off with 12 vehicles, 4 fields and a bunch of money.

I'm not sure about the legacy farm and antique equipment, but the hardest difficulty gives you no vehicles, no land, and $500,000 in your pocket to get started.
