By the moment we meet Maya, she's 17.

Because this is a game made for kids and he is 24 years old in the first game.
I doubt many children will feel relatable if everyone are around 30-40 years old. Especially with the amount of shenanigans and outright incompetence everyone displays.

Despite murder mysteries being a big theme this is a pretty family friendly game. Young characters are there for younger players to relate to. That's pretty much always been thing.

oh right, forgot about Emma, who's Trudy and Athena though? Also, it didn't seem to me that he really "hangs around" Emma that much. He helped her, he might at some point run into Emma in the future at some point for all I know, but they come across more as acquiantances to me.

Well, if you wanna count teenagers as kids since the games are rated T (cept DD which is rated M)

Maya ~ She's Mia's sister so it's a given, and she was above 18 from the second game onward
Pearl ~ Maya's cousin, basically just there for vacation
Ema ~ She honestly just came to him and he basically needed her to tag along

TL;DR, they more or less just come to him

Well, if you wanna be technical, Pearl is the only one, at least in the trilogy, to be below that age and she has the excuse of being around Maya. While Maya and Ema are 16 and 17/18/19 respectively
