Well, in the Japanese original, the guy is called Naruhodou
Maya call him Naruhodou-kun, the -kun suffix is only used for people you're closed to

It's in the intention to show that Maya (Mayoi) use this is because in English equivalent, sometimes people use short-form of names (Joe/Joseph, Sam/Samantha) when refer to a closer friends or family, so this is to show that one.

Also, in the English version, I believe she starts using Nick more after she hears his friend Larry Butz call him that.
