ha ! actually i know more about game developement than you thing. its exactly the opposite, i'm super experienced. and i know the graphics engine would suffer, BUT it can suffer. on pc it easily has the opportunity to suffer because pc hardware is superstrong.
did you read through my posts ? did you see that on my GT980ti, which hardly is a good gpu these days (lets be honest, its only mediocre these days, maybe even below. there are gpus out there that are sooo much stronger) the gpu load in 1080p60 maxed out is only around 20-25%. don'T you think this is a bit ridiculous and there would be still muuuuch room to improve on graphics. 75% of my gpu load are just idling and it could be used with higher graphics settings..
i say, let the engine suffer! and make it better. ramp up the LOD by 2x-3x and the double the shadow resolution. maybe then the game will use around 60-75% of my gpu which would be fine. at least it would look great. also most ppl would still be able to use those graphics settings because most ppl have better gpus than mine these days.. furthermore, the recommended gpu for this game is a gtx 970 which would finally have any reason. right now on a gtx 970 i doubt its getting more than 50% load, most likely even much less..
i've to agree with you about 4k gaming though. i ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hate 4k monitors and 4k gaming because as you said, you see imperfections sooo much more. did you see how ♥♥♥♥♥♥ witcher 3 looks on a 4k monitor ? there you see the low polygon count etc much more than on a 1080p 1440p monitor. same goes for all other games.
but i'm downsampling it from 4k to 1080p because i have a 1080p monitor and this makes it look good. you still don't see the imperfections, but the image is a bit sharper and the anti aliasing (which is laughable in the game) is MUCH better. at least theres that. if only i could fix the shadow resolution and lod from my side, sadly its not possible because the config.ini only has presets and no way to change those things :(
