It's a pretty ok 8/10 in my book.
But the previous games were 7/10 and 9/10 respectively.
The game is a downgrade compared to transformed because while the tracks here are nice they can't hold a candle to Dragon Canyon or Rogue's Landing.
And they can't truly remake those tracks because the transforming was taken out... and they aren't sonic tracks to begin with.
Limiting the roster to just sonic characters annoyed a number of people who liked other sega franchises.
In my 20 or so hours of gameplay i bugged out only once. But your mileage may vary.
The game has a story mode but it's inconsequential at best.
TSR has the advantage of better collision physics.
Bumping cars actually look like cars bumping while in Transformed it had minimal visual feedback.
if you were to buy one kart racer on PC i'd advocate for Transformed.
If you went through transformed then you can try TSR.
And if you have people interested in couch coop like a younger sibling or roommate TSR is a good choice as well since it's one of the few racing games since Double Dash that allow cooperative play.
I think the game did well for what it is, fun and rather complete for what they tried to do. Both TSR and SART have about the same amount of tracks, adding mirror in the lot too. It's another style but fun regardless. Playing solo means you rely on team but you could also do single car races.
The campaign will be exclusively team though and solo wise, it might not be the best for all.
And unlike earlier Sonic games, there are no cutscenes, aside from the opening trailer.
It's just visual-novel styles screenshots of the characters with dialogue (At least it's fully voice acted)
If you want to play a Sonic Game for the story, play Forces.
I wasn't talking about the gameplay at all.
In terms of story, Forces' full 3d cut-scenes are just strait up superior to Team Sonic Racing's repetitive, meandering and boring dialogue with card-board cutouts of the characters.
I mean, For the love of Arceus, one of the dialogue sequences after you beat a 3 or 4-race tournament at the end of a chapter is just Amy talking to Big about cookies.
That's your grand reward for getting through that many races without getting screwed by your "allies" or by the egregious rubber-banding: cookies.
You can slag off the whole Avatar thing, and how dumb Infinite is as a character as much as you like. It's still better because it's such a low bar to clear.
I don't even know why everybody hates Forces, it's actually a decent game. Perhaps the fact that it's the first Sonic game I've played since Heroes, so I'm not looking at it through entitled fan-boy glasses, has something to do with it.
People hate it because it uses the boost formula but does so poorly.
As in... previous games utilizing that system just worked better and had better level design than forces.
Just look at "Rooftop Run" or "Cool Edge" from Unleashed and compare it with the levels in Forces.
Forces levels almost play themselves with all the boost pads put everywhere to make sure you don't go off track.
Additionally some of the features like drifting got removed and mostly replaced by automation.
Good story or not, I'll stick to older games where I can at least get 20 hours out of them (SA2B by example). Buying some big game just for 3 or 4 hours of bad content (at 50$ wtf), just no way... And while TSR is definitely not the best release ever, at least I got 59 hours from it so far.
It certainly is a cool fun racer. I like it. Cant understand the hate. But i play offline / singleplayer only and dont care for the campaign.
Also: the tracks a really well done and very comfortable to drive on ( wide big roads ) and you get to color the cars and it got many characters ( each has unique attributes )
