Jelly kills me
I got somnia by randomly getting pushed back by green shadow doggies. When I try to smoke jelly at 100% HP and full belly, I die instantly. Help.

Those doggies can raise your somnia if you let them jump you. Spot the doggies from afar and slowly inch up to them and press 'e' when prompted so they don't jump you. When your at full somnia anything that increases it will kill you for example drugs like jelly which I think increases somnia and the doggies if they jump you. Though I'm not sure if when the game shows the somnia affliction its at full and the next increase in somnia will kill you

The jelly tooltip says it's supposed to reduce somnia though.

I have managed to get jelly to reduce somnia without killing me - once or twice. Most of the time it does indeed kill me, for reasons I can't figure out. Possibly because it cures more somnia than I have, and then the variables overrun and somnia maxes out? It's probably something stupid like that.

Anyway, yeah don't use jelly, if it doesn't kill you will be the exception.

If you don't have Meson-A yet (which will be in limited supply when you do get it), then I'd recommend using cigarettes. Depending on how high your somnia is, smoking 3 or so may be enough to get it to a manageable level.

Apart from that, whenever you see a somnia dog just edge closer to it until the E appears, then just push it - voila, doggie magically disappears and AFAIK you get zero somnia added! If you do this with all somnia dogs you find, and you refrain from munching on stuff that increases somnia (easy enough to do, since most stuff that increases somnia is useless anyway), then the only somnia increases will likely be from plot points - and these are minor. In my current play I think I have so many A-meson and B-Meson that I have a bunch stashed back at base, and only keep a few on me just in case - have only needed to use it once so far.

In an old message on this forum, someone said that pressing "E" to remove an invisible dog will reduce the Somnia level. Is that true?

I tested the idea. Removing a dog won't reduce the Somnia level.

I tried two tests:

Test 1:
=====
1. I let three dogs attack me.
2. I pressed "E" to clear dog number four.
3. I let another dog attack me (dog number five), and my character died.

Test 2:
=====
1. I let three dogs attack me.
2. I pressed "E" to clear four dogs (dog number four, dog number five, dog number six, and dog number seven).
3. I let another dog attack me (dog number eight), and my character died.

Now that we know that clearing four dogs won't remove the Somnia added by the first three dogs, we know that the process of pressing "E" won't reduce the Somnia level, so whoever wrote that old message was wrong.

But we should still clear the dogs to avoid the possibility of accidentally walking next to them later.

no no no I'm saying that the dogs raise your somnia when they jump scare you. So as to not let them raise your somnia level you have to press 'e' on them to kill them before they can jump scare you. Removing/killing them doesn't lower your somnia levels.

When I said someone in an old message on this forum claimed that it reduced the Somnia level, I wasn't talking about you. I was talking about a message I saw a long time ago that was probably posted a few years ago.

I got somnia by running into the dogs and now I got somnia for the first time. Tried using the jelly and here I am - that janky programming explanation makes perfect sense, I'll try to give the somnia more time to see if that is the case.
Update: so after looking into it and experimenting with different levels of somnia, it doesn't seem like jelly helps whatsoever. Since the somnia mechanic functions as a debuff, I have yet to try with a higher HP pool + buffs. Cheapest way to lower somnia (pre Meson-A) is to smoke and have a Dr. heal you.

I think jelly kills you because effect conditions says it must: remove -50% HP, add 30% hunger, remove -20% mental disorder (somnia). In sum it will be 100%. This is what we see in game, when it remove all 100% of HP, you can sometimes survive if you completely clean of somnia, have 100% HP and used biostim that show you that you healing, so when you use Jelly you receive -100% HP and in same time biostim add you some HP.

One more thing to see, will be -30% HP additionally removed from you if you dont have any somnia at all (value is 0).

In any case, we can fix it.
