Also, I personally like Bemelle's character the most, we share the same opinion on the Guide
Funny how it could actually be something happenning years later in the "Change" ending.
But really, Lu's best outcome is my favorite romance in terms of poetry, mystery and depth.
The "Change" ending is my second best romance wise. Somehow, I can see that ending evolving into some slow burn friendship+ with the Guide there. Granted that Nixi are naturally agender, and maybe not radically exclusive, it wouldn't have to end in a unrequited love triangle.
Bemelle's "good" ending was cute, but...the guy sounded too much like a child Kikka felt responsible for I think. Beside, I didn't like how callous he turns toward the Guide when there are three travellers on the second night. At that point, he has little beside of a vague hunch he can't justify plus a forceful self-righteousness to justify his deeds. Thought it turned out to be harmless fun rather than the ungrateful humiliation it looks like, in that timeline, with what the characters know of the Guide, Bemelle's deeds don't make his ideals so nice and altruistic anymore.
Haha yes, I still don't know what I'm supposed to think about that romance
I'm also a lot more fond of getting close to Margaret than I expected to be- I like to think that whoever she romances, Bemelle or Margret, all three of them hang around like an odd little family after the whole ordeal is over.
...tbh I'm wishy-washy and just kind of like all the romances for different reasons. ...did I fail to answer the thread's question?
...and I -do- like the Guide- his romance is just a little too bitter in the bittersweet in the best of outcomes for me.
I mentioned it earlier, but yes, I did like Lu's route a lot too, the one where he survives and spoils the lake's secrets along the way. The ones where he doesn't survive seem even more tragic after seeing his golden ending. I like the route's ambiguous writing. You think he is a black sheep in a human village and his execution takes place on land, but in fact he is a Nix! It's an example of really smart writing. His route is great plotwise and made me feel a lot of different things, but the romance part itself... I'm not so sure about.
Margret is also nice, I liked her romance.
I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't a mock route for a Mr Dour—err I mean Mr Dirlt on the path of the Empty/Connection ending.
Heh. Either his appearance is different to Kikka, or the woman has drunk too much lake water and that made her lose her sense of sight.
When you play the tho other bonus routes, you get to wonder...
Lu route is great, probably the best one, because it reveals the most of the scenario. But I would not call it romance, because I'm unable to see Lu as something else than a child.
Margret o the other hand feels more like a friendship than romance.
And I have to agree with the Guide: they don't know each other at all. He also does not show any true human feeling, except his care about his people. It is not romantic when you feel mocked by someone.
Only Bemelle is believable and in this case it feels like somthing what has been developing for long time and only got quickened because of the circumstances.
One more thing: the romance is only small addition to what this game has waiting for you!
Dear developers thank you for a great game!
IHowever, I'll add that in Bemelle case there isn't anything purely romantic either, then. Otherwise, the beach walk + shell gift moment with Lu has to count. Whether it works or not, it's romantic by nature.
In every route, solid romance comes only later after the epilogue ends.
But that's just a feature.
I haven't ever gotten all the way through Margret's route, but from what I've seen, hers does feel more like a friendship than a romance.
The Guide's romance was nice, but definitely on the bitter end of bittersweet. I found it almost as heartbreaking as Lu's.
Lu's romance was hard. His relationship with Kikka actually felt more like that of a surrogate son than a romance partner, to be honest. Even so, his romance was sad.
I haven't played Margret's yet, but I don't really get romantic vibes from what I have seen.
As for the Guide, in terms of the game his is the most lacking of all the romances. He shows the least amount of himself and it's even implied that what glimpses we did see were him outright lying to foster the image he wished to convey. It's the most broken and uneven relationship we can obtain, and the one where this is no truly happy ending. Just sadness and the literal manifestation of the two different species and their inability to coexist.
However I'm not going to lie... I still prefer the Guide's romance. I'm a sucker for tragedy, and both 'endings' have so much potential for expansion that I felt the other romances, bar Lu's, just didn't have. Plus given Lu's 'good' ending, my headcanon is that in the 'bad' Guide end, Kikka is sent to the same island after she blacks out. Because for all his lies, I don't think the Guide wanted to kill Kikka. He did in the actual game, but ♥♥♥♥ it let me have my angst ridden eventually happy ending dangit.
The information about Lu DID come as a bit of a surprise, but again, there were subtle hints.
Margaret's romance definitely feels like a friendship or sisterly bond rather than a romance, but it's sweet, and I like the glimpses you get into her character. When you first meet her, she comes off as brusque almost to the point of arrogance, but now that I've seen her romance it feels like her attitude is more a reaction to the Guide's attitude than a true reflection of her character.
