Conversely, if you haven't met those prerequisites, and you choose the hypothetical harem option anyway (because I think you should be able to choose options you can't handle), it should blow up in your face and you should lose them all...while still technically "winning" the game.
I'd really have honestly preferred that all of the options throughout the game with requirements of money or skills, etc, were blind. That you had no definitive way to tell what was required, and that you're able to select options for which you don't meet the requirements. Granted, there should be some strong but still subtle clues in the dialogue as to what a given prerequisite is, but you should have to pay attention and think about it, not have it handed to you. And if you don't meet the requirements, it fails.
But, it is what it is. The game (VN) is still remarkably engaging and fulfilling for being what it is. I was a little shocked.
Besides, look at Cabin Fever. it had ONE girl. literally one; not even the ghost of your old girlfriend showed up in that game, and it was beyond awesome.
