Elle is number 1. Mio follows a close 2nd.
In terms of me, it's Iro.
Out of the side dateable characters, Alpha.
Without a single shadow of a doubt Elle is by far the best girl. In terms of the narrative, the design, and the gameplay Elle is the best girl. If not Elle then Quill, then Iro, then Cassie, but certainly not Mio.
Before I get into why Elle is the best let me explain why Mio might actually be the worst. It is very clear that her character was created solely to pander to horny gamers, in fact that is her entire plot. And before I hear a comment about "Yeah, that's why I'm playing this game, genius", I would say that you are wasting your time here because the focus of the game is not pornography. The purpose of this game is to live vicariously through a character who is charming enough to date multiple pretty girls at once, and on a grander scale it is a story about forging a loving connection that is not purely carnal. Mio's design and aesthetic are almost entirely counter to this goal, and the moral of her story even confirms this. Her whole story is that she has formed this gamer girl persona just because she gets alot of positive attention from it and needs that validation, but she is growing weary of it. However, she gets pissed at you if you call her out on it from the beginning as if that is not her problem??? I wouldn't have a problem with her being a quirky nerdy girl if there was actual substance to it, but there isn't. Her entire being is literally just Sexy Gamer Girl and that's it. Every single date is just make a gamer reference or talk about gamer stuff, or be a nerd and it always works out completely predictably. Again, that isn't to say that character's in this game aren't sometimes a bit one dimensional, but Mio is the most one dimensional and is unapologetic about it. She'll say some pandering ♥♥♥♥ like "I'll cosplay as Chun-Li and do the bounce thing" or whatever the ♥♥♥♥ and all I can see is that it is a blatant and obvious pander to gamers. And the fact that so many people are adamant that Mio is the best proves that they did a good job at setting the bait. I get that gamer girls exist in real life, and I am certain I have met at least 3 Mios in my lifetime, but I would have appreciated a little more nuance and tact when creating this archetype of a character instead of just quirky nerdy messy haired girl with huge boobs who is a gamer and also a cam girl. Just lazy in my opinion.
With that out of the way, let me explain to you why Elle is the best girl. Again, I will refer you to the moral and objective of the game as a whole. Forge relationships that are not purely carnal and utilize those relationships to better their lives. Elle's story should have been the central story of the game (but again, they kinda decided to give that to Mio, seeing as she is the poster girl and the one who requires the most checks). Elle's story isn't about seeing some hot chick and trying to date them on a whim, it isn't about trying to ♥♥♥♥ a loose woman who is throwing herself at you, and it isn't about breaking a shy or rude girl out of her shell. Elle's story is a fairytale. Or at the very least it starts like one. It is a story about helping a scared and trapped princess escape an evil that nobody else can see. It is a story about being gentle and patient, but at the same time bold and daring. And even though you are accused of "corrupting her innocence" what you have actually succeeded in doing is freeing her from the fear and depression she faces. I should mention that this is done (at least if you do it correctly) completely without the expectation of or proposal for sex, unlike a certain gamer girl I know who pretty much solicits you at least once every interaction (but I digress). Design wise I think Elle's figure is a bit... gratuitous, I'll admit, but I can also see that as an intentional choice to exaggerate a specific aspect of who she is. She is vulnerable and soft, not in such a way that it is even used for promiscuity, almost like she is somewhat unaware of how she looks. She mentions that she dyes her hair pink because Dorian demands it of her, and that Dorian does this so that she will appear small, frail and feminine I think her physical appearance solidifies that sense of femininity in that it could be dangerous if she were to go unconscious to be so soft. Finally, let me talk about how her interactions are game play wise, I think we can agree that Suave is the most important Light Stat to have, right? I mean even if you are not trying to get the perfect ending, by the late game you need suave for pretty much everything and everyone, but most of all for Elle. The same cannot be said for Mio's main stat, Tech Savy, which mostly only appears during Mio's interactions. Suave is also, in my opinion, the trait which makes the most sense for the player to be proficient at as far as the narrative is concerned. That is THE trait which the two goddesses expect you to have. It is THE trait which should be the guiding factor in how you plan on wooing and saving these five girls. Without the ability to convey information well and in a way that people want to hear, you would have a hard time accomplishing anything. Infact, suave is so important to the narrative that even Dorian, who is supposed to represent a protagonist who chose to go full evil and stay in Subrosa, still is portrayed as having a stupidly high Suave stat despite being so favored by the goddess of darkness that she literally ♥♥♥♥♥♥ him into being even more evil.
All of that to say, it is as if the game wants you to pursue Elle anyway because it gives you such an incentive to spec into suave just to play the game.
Honorable mention is Quill who... To be perfectly frank with you, after having played through the game 3 and a half times, I still don't really understand. But I understand enough to know that she is definitely one of the funniest characters because her jokes are actual jokes instead of just gamer references.
Now this last part is especially silly for me to put in this essay that nobody asked for or wants to read, but I think in the end there is something to be said about the kind of person each girl resonates with. It seems all the people saying Mio feel the same exact way about her as eachother, people who say Iro are so straightforward they feel little need to justify themselves, people who say Cassie are really defensive about it, and people who say Elle, like me, are suckers for a fairytale romance ^_^".
Anyway, TL;DR I really like Elle and really really dislike Mio.
