Jaws of the Lion classes and items
Are there any new classes and items that are clearly superior to the vanilla campaign alternatives? If yes, then I might hold off finishing the game and just wait till the DLC is released.

I think they are actually a bit more balanced, and generally speaking, easier to play. The strongest classes in the game are in the base game. Eclipse in particular, is clearly broken (although super fun to play for a while)

I mean you'll need to start a new campaign to play with them anyhow.

You won't need to start a new camapaign to play them. If you buy the DLC you'll be able to apply it to any existing campaign and get the Jaws characters, initial items and scenarios within it as long as scenario 2 is completed. For a new campaign the Jaws characters and initial items will be available from the start, and the scenarios unlock after campaign scenario 2.

Oh that's good, I misread.

I'd have said the opposite. Almost all cards are playable compared to the class of the base game where lots of cards are clearly below some others. That makes them hardest to play given the choices of cards.
In term of power they are pretty strong but I have not found an OP combination (such as full shield for sunkeeper).

I love my sunkeeper!

Yeah, there are balance issues in some of the base game classes for sure. Like, can you even play the mindthief without having The Mind's Weakness up at all times? And really, the so-called "active Beast Tyrant" build seems so weak compared to the one where all the build goes into turning the bear into a ferocious killing machine.
