Cheating with Brute Level 3 cards (Hook and Chain)
Bottom part of level 3 card Hook and Chain for brute says:

"Move 4
If the movement was in a straight line, perform
Attack X
where X is the number of hexes you moved with this action."

This card is broken... it always lets you "Attack X" - so you can activate boots to move +2 and attack 6 very reliably, whether or not you moved in a straight line...

The detection of whether you moved in a straight line is probably difficult given how the game was implemented, but I hope this gets fixed someday, because otherwise that card is really OP.

There is a Cragheart card that lets you move up to 6 hexes but in a straight line only, so the implementation of the expected mechanic should be doable (I think)

I'm pretty sure used to work properly, so it's a bug rather than an unimplemented ability.

Well, I've just tried this, and it it works correctly for me. Tried non-straight paths with and without boots, and no difference - no attack. A move 2 in a straight line gave an attack 2, as it should. I'm likely on a different build to you, but I don't recall anything in the patch notes about it. Not that it's something I'd particularly remember.

We keep playing with this broken card. Definitely cheating. Circular movement, back-and-forth movement. Bottom half always triggers.

4p multiplayer if it matters.

sounds like a bug. it never worked as you mentioned before the latest patch. latest patch broken a lot of boots.
Proclivitas May 23, 2022 @ 1:22am
I actually tried it today, and it does not work in local player in guildmaster (as it shouldn't)!

However, it seems to reliably work in a 4p multiplayer environment (brute player is not host), while playing the Gloomhaven "original" campaign. Card always seems to trigger.

So it's either an issue with multiplayer when player is not host, or an issue with gloomhaven campaign. Latest that I saw it (wrongly) triggered was yesterday evening.

i guess you will have to intentionally skip the attack. otherwise, it's broken. There should be a patch soon, there's too many bug current patch.

I only play campaign and i only get the attack if he moved in straight line.

the only "bug" i kinda consider is that if i move 3 forward and 1 back (which is still a straight line...) i do NOT get the attack option...

For the record that is not moving in a straight line. That is a moving and then doing a 180 degree turn and moving

Just following up that I am still experiencing this bug also. In Campaign, Boots + Hook & Chain bottom still activates an attack, even if not moving in a straight line in multiplayer (2p, Brute controlled by host). Did not proc with Hook & Chain without Boots in Single Player Guildmaster mode. Not sure which of those variables changes the outcome.

I assumed going back and forth is a feature... The card never specified the straight line has to be in the same direction. My group allows that, but I've also ran into the bug if 4/6 of the movement with boots is in a straight line then you can attack afterwards.
Proclivitas Feb 11, 2023 @ 3:54pm
Thematically, the card represents a fast dash / sprint, so going back and forth makes the least sense if you're not even allowed to turn a little bit.
Slow Dog Feb 11, 2023 @ 11:55pm
You're not allowed to make 180 degree turns. Mathematically it stops it being a straight line, as a straight line is one with no turns. And it's explicitly prohibited in the game FAQ for those who aren't convinced by maths.

Rezzing this, since I think I've pinpointed the issue. Now, I may be but an Epic Store peasant, but if that version hasn't been fixed then I suppose the Steam one hasn't been either. The bug seems to be connected with the Horned Helmet, more specifically with the attack bonus it gives after having traversed 4 hexes. If you move 3 or less hexes with Hook & Chain then you can use it to attack only if you have moved in a straight line (as it should be). However, if you move 4 hexes and the HH bonus to damage kicks in then it doesn't matter, whether you ran in a straight line or not, you can always use the bottom of H&C to attack for 4+1 damage.
