Beginner: building party
I've started with two characters, brute & rogue. Currently level 2, nearing 3. When should I add further party members? Does the game make suggestions in this regard?

The game scales to both party size average party level!

The number of enemies, their placement and whether they are elite or not changes if you play with 2, 3 or 4 party size.

If I remember correctly, on normal difficulty, scenario level is your average party member level, divided by 2 and rounded up to a whole number. That would mean if you had a party of 3 with 2x level 3s and 1x lvl 1 you would have:

3+3+1=7
7/3=2.33
2.3/2=1.166

1.66 Rounded up to a whole number = 2

If you carry on as 2x level 3s you would also be on scenario lvl 2 as that would be an average party lvl of 3 which divided by 2 and rounded up is once again 2.

As such the only thing that would be different at first would be that you now play the scenarios with the 3x character enemy placement and numbers.

This is an online GH scenario book that shows the scenario layout and different enemy placement based on the different party sizes:

GL and have fun!

Originally it's a board game so character number was intended as player number.

As the game balances both number of chars and their levels by selecting scenario level and by number & variant of enemies there is no reason to go one way or another.
Just play with how many and what kind of chars you feel good with.

Less characters is easier from a management point of view and missions are quicker because overall less stuff going on.
More characters is better because some mechanics are not balanced to lower character count like progress of prosperity or spawns & summons as max group size of enemies is the same.

I felt that two wasn't enough after the first 3 quests, so hired the next one up and finished the first city dungeon with one player standing. I'd tried the Crypt of the Damned, for instance, and was way short with two players.

Having got a better understanding of some of the mechanics, I started over, and I dare say I'll want to do so again.
